Summer School at a Community College

Hey, I’m a junior in high school that’s in geometry (I’m doing pretty well) because I was homeschooled for one year and it set me two years behind. I was planning on taking algebra II over the summer through BYU independent study (I believe that only the teacher-led courses are UC approved). My question is: will I be able to take precalculus and algebra II concurrently over the summer so I can be in calculus my senior year? I’m taking AP Stats next year…

or should I just take calculus at a community college through dual enrollment during my senior year?

Thanks!

Okay, so if you were taking Alg II and Pre-Calc through BYU, then you would have to complete 2 classes during the summer. That’s a lot of work especially for two math classes, but more specifically 2 that really need to be taught separately. You’d be flying through the material and Alg II is a pre-req for pre-calc.

You don’t need calculus to apply to college. You only need to be “calculus-ready”. In fact, 1/3 of students admitted to HARVARD have precalculus only. You can even apply to engineering with precalculus (as long as you have excellent grades in it).
Therefore, I would recommend that you take Algebra II over the summer and Precalculus during the year.
Statistics is an excellent class to take, but it’s better to take it in college, since employers like it.

I took Algebra 2 over the summer. It was pretty easy and fun- I wish I took the honors version-and got a 95 and a 93 on the placement exam. However, PreCalc (Especially the trig portion) can be quite confusing at times. If you are taking PreCalc over the summer pay close attention and do plenty of practice problems.
Make sure to complete A.2 first.
Good luck!
