summer school at jc

I got accepted to UCLA as a transfer student. I want to take a class at a community college even though I've already finished all my pre-reqs for my major and IGETC. Since the class is UC-transferable, do I have to take the class for a grade or can I choose credit/noncredit? Also, since I'm just taking this class for fun, does UCLA have to know I took it? Do I need to send them another transcript to include it?

They need to know so you'll have to send those transcripts regardless. Also, to be able to transfer those courses to UCLA to satisfy your degree requirements, you'll have to take them for letter grades. At least that was the case for me but I reside in the engineering school here and we have our own policy separate from UCLA.

No, I've already completed all of my pre-reqs and IGETC. I just want to take an additional class for fun this summer. Its not related to my major and I've already completed IGETC. So does UCLA need to know if I take this summer course or not?

No. If you don't want credit for it, you don't have to notify UCLA.

It's not neccessary to notify UCLA. So don't worry.
They won't give you a warning letter asking "WHY DID YOU NOT TELL US YOU WERE TAKING FUN SUMMER CLASSES AT A JC INSTEAD OF UCLA??"

"Q: When do I need to turn in transcripts?

A: There are three deadlines for sending transcripts you should be aware of:

* We need official transcripts for your college course work taken through fall 2006 by June 1, 2007.
* Then we need official transcripts through spring 2007 by July 15, 2007.
* Finally, if you are taking any courses in the summer of 2007, we'll need official transcripts of that work by September 1, 2007."

If you think you're a circumstantial exception, give their admissions office a call...

excellent, so I guess I can take the classes for pass/no pass and not let UCLA know

Yeah what Yam said, you'll be fine. What ee_stu posted likly assumes you want units for the classes.

But regardless, there's now way they're gonna find out anyways, its not like they call around to the local jcs and ask if any UCLA students are taking classes there and not telling UCLA about it.

Take it C/NC and DO SEND your transcripts to UCLA,you can still get UNIT credit for it and that will benefit you int he long run anyways, you need 180 units to graduate so why not get the extra 4 units or so form your summer class? UCLA will accept C/NC JC courses if they are not major related.

the final official transcript I sent from my school had IGETC certification. So doesnt that transcript have to be the last transcript I send? Also, I thought UC's don't want transfers to take classes for P/NP and see it on the transcript
