summer science academy

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone here applied/got into the University of Michigan Summer Science Academy either this year or in previous years, and can tell me about their experience with the program. I'm thinking about applying next year, but I'm definitely not an ethnic minority in the medical field... any comments/advice is appreciated!

Hey! I applied to the University of Michigan Summer Science Academy in March, and I got in! I’ll be attending the academy for two weeks in June. I’ve received all kinds of information, and I’m really looking forward to it! Did you apply? Did anyone else?

hey,
I went to the university of michigan summer science academy in the summer of 2008, so last year. If you’re interested in going into the medical field, i definitely suggest you apply. I had a lot of fun because of the trips, but the classes were also really cool… all we did in the chemistry classes were labs, which kept things interesting, and in the anatomy classes we were lectured by a real professor and watched medical students dissect cadavers (real human bodies). Plus we had guest speakers talk about different careers we could go into in the medical field (my roommate actually found her dream job becuase of that)… so i called it my nerd camp, but i still loved it! You also have a lot of time to just hang out and be crazy (we had a lot of dance parties, for example) and you make really good friendships. I’m still in touch with a lot of the people i hung out with there. And your leaders are college students, so you get to talk alot with them about college. And even if you don’t learn anything science related, it’s a good way to prepare yourself for college, with living in dorms and having community bathrooms.

Oh and if you’re worried about the minority thing… first of all, I’m pretty sure they’re looking for at minorities in general, with no connection to the medical field. And second, although minorities were definitely the majority there, it’s not like if you’re white you can’t get in - there were definitely white people. But I would suggest reaching far into your background… for example europeans are, essentially, caucasian, but if you do like one girl and specifically state you’re Italian, that’s different.

Hello, I just have a quick question. Was it difficult to get accepted for the summer program for Michigan Science Academy? I have 2 (A-) and 1 (B-) for AP U.S. History and I feel like my chances of getting accepted is very low.
Thank you for your time! I really want to go this summer; it sounds super fun(:

I’m not too sure. But don’t just think that your grades will get you in. Make your you have a good essay and a great recommendation. I attended SSA in 2010 and it was one of the best experiences I had. Now, I’ve been accepted to U of M and getting ready to attend in the fall. I do wish you luck on being accepted into the program, and if you do, you should definitely accept the offer
