Summer science program 2012

Hey guys, I also applied to the program and am new to the thread! Good luck to everyone!!

what exactly is looked for in the applications for acceptance? is it truly based on the essays ? can someone who has been accepted before please elaborate on this

numbersense,
It seems like they accept based on a wide-verity of factors that may be different for each candidate.

For example read legallyblonde33’s post on the first page of last year’s thread:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/1027536-summer-science-program-ssp-2011-a.html#post11480523

He/she could be being overly humble, but it seems as though they do put a lot of emphasis on the essays. Reading through last year’s thread hinted at what legallyblonde33 outright said, which was that the essays were very important.

I think several other previous attendees wrote a little about themselves on that thread, you might want to read through it (but not all at once: that thing is huge!)

What do you guys think? 2-3 more weeks?

Lat year had the same deadline. Mass accepted/rejected/wait listed on the 7th of April. Final decisions made around the 26th-ish.
2-3 weeks from now sounds about right.

I’m not holding my breath for it. I think I tried too hard to stay within the word count and my essays ended up without a lot of personality (I wish I would have just gone over). Oh well, I like my applications for other programs and have already been accepted to my back-up.

what do you mean by final decisions on the 26th ? Will we know by the 7th if we are in or not?

I was describing what happened last year (not “lat year”, ugg typos). Which was the last kid we herd from was accepted on the 26th (maybe he was officially/unofficially wait listed and got in after someone else declined, I don’t know), and that there were a lot of notifications on the 7th.

2-3 weeks-ish, for this year is a good guess based off last year, it’s not an exact science.

How many of you went over the word limit for the essays? I stayed within the word limit and did the best I could.

My essays were okay. Just around the word limit.

I won’t get my SAT scores back until the 29th…
the only SAT scores I sent was when I took the DUKETip from 7th grade. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE(:

@starwarnerd,
I stayed within the limit for all the essays and did the best I could too. I also had my AP Lang teacher help me with them. Actually she helped me with essays for MITES but I reused a lot of them for SSP. Hopefully that doesn’t show too much…

My essays were all within -5% to + 10% word count.

do u guys think they’ll be out next week?

they could be out any day now. although i think it will err on the later side because of the MITES thing…

Just curious: what MITES thing?

From SSP website: Mar. 8, 2012
An email describing SSP was mistakenly delayed, and sent to MITES applicants on March 8, after the announced deadline had passed. For MITES applicants only, the application deadline has been extended. All required parts must be received no later than Monday, March 26.

Presumably they will take a little extra time in order to consider MITES applicants in contrast with the rest of the pool.

I took the March SAT and got the score back a few days ago. I got a 2200 but a 660 in math :frowning: which is much worse than my PSAT. Should I avoid sending my scores?

Do you guys know if SSP would let us go away for a weekend of the program? I made nationals for fbla this weekend and really would like to go but if I do happen to get into SSP I really want to go to it. I was hoping though that the program might let me attend the fbla nationals.

^same situation here. I think perhaps a more reasonable request would be just to go during the two days we actually compete (1 day if you don’t make it to finals.) The rest is just a waste of time, like most things we do in FBLA :p

What event are you in? I’m in entrepreneurship so unfortunately my mc is on Friday evening and then finals are Sunday for me. But hopefully they’d just let us miss the weekend and then come back
