Summer Science Program 2016

I don’t think they care a lot about test scores, at least compared to other programs. The essays are probably more important, and the demonstrated passion is the most important.

Does anyone thing results could come out within the next week? Or am I just getting my hopes up

Last year they came out on April 10, so it’s a very real possibility… hyperventilates

I’ve also realized that NMTech starts on my parents’ anniversary, so I really hope that if I do get in, it’s to Colorado. However, it would be a miracle for me to get in in the first place, so…

@tonystarkofwinterfell that was the end of the first full week of April…WHICH IS NEXT WEEK cries

I decided that if I get in, I’ll just find a way to go. I don’t care how much fundraising I have to do, it would be so worth it.

I’m so in love with SSP at this point that I’m going to be really disappointed if I don’t get in (which is probably what’s going to happen). Agh. Why do summer programs have to be so enticing?

@coffeeaddicted they said mid april so idk maybe first week is kinda pushing it. :frowning: ugh guyyyysss I want to get in SOOOO BADDDD

Ugh I wrote an essay about grav waves but I feel like I never elaborated enough about why I like them, What I would do to resubmit that :frowning:

Apparently last year and the year before they released on April 10? So if they do the same thing this year, we can expect results next Sunday…

Ahh just found out that the last person from my school who I know attended SSP two years ago had impossibly good everything and I’m low-key (or maybe high-key?) freaking out now.

@tonystarkofwinterfell do you know their stats?

Ugh I think I have some good stuff but my test scores need alot of work and my ECs are kind of every where :frowning:

THIS IS TOO STRESSFUL IM BANNING MYSELF FOR CC FOR THE NEXT 10 DAYS STARTING NOW

@usastudent101 not so much stats as ECs, but published research & USAMO/USPhO medalist/finalist. She also took Calculus sophomore year, something very very rare at my school (normal progression is Calc senior year & around 15% of the class takes it junior year) and had some other tech awards. Started her own nonprofit, the whole shebang.

^that is some pretty crazy stuff. I hope it’s true what people are saying about the essays being heavily weighted…I put a LOT of effort into mine. I don’t have research or olympiads though

Also, from 2013 on, SSP seems to have released decisions on April 10th (there may have been some application errors in 2012, so they were released a day later.) I really need them by then though, bc the 10th is when I have to respond to Garcia by…

@picats3141 I really hope essays are the most important part, too. None of my accomplishments are extraordinary by any means.

Ugh I can’t wait for admissions day. SSP is, quite honestly, my dream summer program.

Yeah I worked REALLY hard on essays. Like I took my RSI essays, condensed them to the best of the best parts, and then heavily edited/re-wrote over the period of a few weeks. And I had some of my friends look over them.

What’s really stressing me out is a) the cost and b) I already responded to FSU YSP and said I could go, so I’ll have to betray them and they’ll hate me : / I mean it’ll give someone on the waitlist a chance to go, but I feel really bad.

I just became the representative of International Olympiad of Astronomy and Astrophysics for the United States this year.
I made an update to SSP application status about this info.
Really hope this helps my chance.

@MadAstro congrats!! You probably have a really good chance now (although idk chances are you did already but I don’t know your stats)

So I realize that, at this point, asking this is pointless, but i still have to ask anyways lol.
I have no knowledge about astronomy, and I’m not too good at physics either. Also, I have no previous research experience. However, I am pretty serious about math competitions, and I have a long history of math comps etc.
Am I the type of person that SSP is looking for?

Thanks. @coffeeaddicted
I might have some strong ECs, but compared to those who have USAMO or USPhO or some Intel Science Fair winnings, mine is still not that good:
Research conducted with Polar Institute of Korea in Polar Region (Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, Norway) about Patterned Ground
Silver Medalist from International Asia-Pacific Astronomy Olympiad 2013
Have a patent: A model of convenient kitchen facilities with an addition of foldable handles
Won a silver medal from the National Korean Invention competition 2013 from that invention (patent)
USAAAO representative of United States for International Astronomy and Astrophysics in 2016

But… Really, my “scores” are low.
If you really wanna know my scores I can message you privately. My scores are just NOT GOOD

I dont know about the letter of rec. Hope that they’ve did their best

Essay… I honestly didnt put the best effort that I could because I was busy about ACT, and other essays that I wrote for other summer camps (one of them I already got DENIED)

In their website, it says that they will select students who are likely to benefit very much from SSP program. Since SSP is about Astronomy and Physics… I don’t know they want some Math people! @Runkeeper

@Runkeeper they accept a wide variety of people, including people whose interests aren’t astronomy/physics-specific. In addition, they require people to have advanced knowledge of math (because of the calculus that they make you do) so you have an advantage there.

And omg @MadAstro your stats are amazing! Having research AND a patent is great.

@MadAstro I can’t tell if you’re being genuine, but clearly your ECs aren’t “not that good” They’re probably some of best even for SSP applications. Pls stop complaining about you’re “mediocre stats” when most of us don’t even have any awards. I mean Silver Medalist from International Asia-Pacific Astronomy Olympiad 2013? You call that “not that good”?
