Summer Science Program 2019

Yeah I did

@YaHerd congrats!!! Bio or Physics? Are you junior?

My S, a sophomore, applied for Biochem@Purdue.
4/10, email “SSP Alternative List”
4/17, email “Congratulations”
So excited!

@royalflush792 Can you comment on how much time you spent on bunch work vs discussion/seminar/instruction? Additionally, we all know lab work does not always produce desirable outcome, even for routine experiments. Will a misstep/blunder potentially downgrade SSP experience? For example, if you fail to harvest sufficient amount of Cdc14 in Week One, are you able to proceed? Or if you somehow manage to lose all your samples during electrophoresis at Week Two, do you have to start from scratch?
Thank you for volunteering to answer questions!

@2021girl Bio and I’m a junior.
Most of my impressive stats were math-based though so I thought it would be a reach, but I guess my standardized test scores and essays probably carried me

@YaHerd Feel happy for you!!
I applied for the astrophysics.

@YaHerd hi I’ll also be at SSP @ UCSD this summer! I know I said in previous posts I would be at Purdue, but due to a scheduling skirmish I managed to switch campuses. I don’t have enough posts to send private messages yet, but I’ll get there, I guess…

did anyone get off the astrophysics waitlist yet?

@lolazo MOSTEC if MIT etc. is your top choice college

I decided to commit to SSP instead of MOSTEC as I felt the in-person nature of SSP would be more beneficial. Both are impressive programs either way so you should participate in what you feel you are better suited for.

Speaking of which: I am participating in Biochemistry at UCSD. Has anyone started a group chat for SSP yet? Feel free to send me the information once one is made.

@Harry3320 I dont think there currently is a facebook group or a group chat. I think someone here could make one. I know some others who aren’t on CC who would like to join a group chat as well.

@cyclowl @Harry3320 @janeamymigil U wanna start one? Should we do Discord, iMessage, Insta, SnapChat, FB?

I think FB would be better. Because iMessage only works for apple phones which not everyone may have

FYI, SSP just sent email to alumni and alumni parents that said “Astrophysics and Biochemistry each attracted over 650 applicants from around the world, and admissions rate of 11%. … Volunteers on the Admissions Committee diligently selected 36 x 4 = 144 to admit, shedding a few tears for the hundreds they had to turn away.”

Congrats to those who are attending!

FYI for future applicants, they are looking into adding a 3rd program in the field of genomics. It will be a couple years before that rolls out, though.

I would lean towards snap or discord; I don’t have a FB because the Zuck’s privacy policies scare me.

Hey @Ynotgo do you have the link to where they posted the stuff about upcoming programs in metagenomics? I remember seeing the link and it saying stuff about a pilot in 2020 and full program in 2021 but I can’t remember or find the link where I saw it.

@Savage2001 https://summerscience.org/about/the-universal-times-newsletter/

I would be fine with anything for a group chat. I do feel, however, that discord or snap might work better than Facebook. @owenmitch1, you should create something and post it on this forum page.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:

The challenge is that the link will be blocked as it is a ToS violation, as is asking users to PM you the link.

SSP normally sets up a private FB group, perhaps after the deadline to accept (I don’t know if that has passed). One of you might contact the office to find out when that will be or if they’ve forgotten that step. There aren’t all that many SSP participants on this board; you’ll want the group to which everyone is invited.

Waitlisted by ISSYP. Does anyone know the chance of getting off the waitlist? Also is anyone else on it?
