Summer Science Program (SSP) 2010

Oh good, I’ll be getting mine on the 19th about.

Jersey13, same! i sent mine in this morning as well :)

i answered mine as a big essay…btw did everyone go in order when answering the questions? i started with 3, then 2, then 1 and 4…
just wondering, has anyone’s close relatives been to SSP before? and if they did, did you guys mention it in your essays?
and good luck to everyone too =)
@Jersey13 last minute things ftw! ;D

just wondering

Does everyone here have like 2250+ SAT scores and 3.9+ GPAs?
What about prior research experiencing?

I was looking through the application form and I have a question about the teacher recommendations: would one’s AP computer science teacher count as a science teachers? At my school that class counts for a technology credit rather than a science credit.

I know I’m late for this year, I’m only a sophomore though, so I have next year to think until.

@ginroth: I got one of my recs from my computer science teacher, and I got in, so it must have been fine.
@mabsjenbu123: Not a lot of people had prior research experience, but GPA’s were all very good (although I don’t think this is necessary).
About the SAT: Not everyone had 2250+, but some did.
Good luck to everyone!

I have zero prior research experience but a 4.0 and a 2370 lol, hopefully 2400 once this March score comes back.

Your stats are similar to mine when I applied (Except i had a little research experience) - anyway, if your essays are good you should get in.

It’s (almost) all about the essays. xD

i have 3 years of research experience (1 yr bio, 2 years math along with 2 years geology) and A+ GPA but my SATs are…well…=X

As long as you have 4.0-ish GPA and 2200+ SAT/32+ ACT, I don’t think SSP takes those into account too much. Then they just focus on teacher recs and your essay. What’s the point of accepting a 4.0 UW/2400 SAT person if he/she is not interested or is going to slack off at camp? Wouldn’t they rather accept someone with a 2180 SAT who puts absolutely everything into something they love? It’s easy to tell if you really love something from your essay. The recs are just there to back up (or deny) your true interests.

Did anyone else attach a resum

Osht. I should’ve included a resume.
The thing is that the strength of my app is probably my ECs, so I was really confused when I realized that SSP didn’t need an EC description -___-.

I turned in 3 recommendations but no resume since it was not mentioned in the application instructions. My counselor specifically recommended against including items that were not asked for–it irritates admissions committees.

I emailed Mr. Bowdon asking him if I could attach a resum

does anyone remember how many sophomores applied last year? (approximately)
and how many got in?

only three got in or something…

I was a sophomore who applied and got in last year. There were 3 or 4 sophomores at my location, and probably the same at the other. That makes for around 10% of the total.
As for applied: I’m not sure…
edit: some of these sophomores were from overseas.

Do you mind post your stats as a sophomore please? Thanks

Actually, it’s more like 55% (around 20 applied and 11 got in) since some people applied to other schools ED or EA instead (Stanford/Yale/Columbia/HMC) and did not apply to Caltech RD after getting in early. Probably around the same rate for MIT. Remember not everyone is going to apply to HYPSMC…I would say about 80-90% have gotten into their first choice college.

Not going to lie, tomjonesistheman is the man.
If you search last year’s ssp thread it’s on there somewhere, albeit a bit un-updated.
