Summer Science Program (SSP) 2013

Your groups of three are who you will be spending most of the time with when doing the actual project. Observations, writing progress reports, the final report, will all be done with them. However, thats relatively little compared to the rest of the program, as hpyscm said you will become SUPER close with everybody. As for the skillset, I actually can’t say. It certainly seemed like that in some groups but not as much in others, I think it was more random.

You guys have been so helpful, thanks so much.

One last question - what are the essays like? I didn’t get a chance to look at last year’s application, and it would be nice to know the general topic of the essays so I can begin to think about what I want to write about.

I’m really excited to apply for this program. Every SSP’er whom I’ve seen on CC raves about his/her experience, so I presume it’s pretty great! I hope I get in.

Essays are modest and really let you tell them about the person you are. Similar to MIT’s essays :P

The essays are a lot like college essays, and I think two were the exact same questions as from two schools I’ve applied to. They want to know about your background (school, family) and how its affected you in one of the essays. In another they want to know about why you think you’d be a good fit for SSP. Again be honest. I said I liked astronomy but that was the truth and not just to get in. My roommate said he talked about chemistry and got in, remember that passon will speak loudly. I forget the others at the moment.

So i’m applying to ca :d so i wish everyone the best of luck!
We should keep this thread alive so we can also make a ssp 2013 FACEBOOK group if we get accepted :stuck_out_tongue: but yea !

@prototyped I’m down ;)

Anyone else applying to like ten programs? I have this horrible fear of not getting accepted into anything, so I’m trying to increase my chances in any way.

Of course, I did just get my SAT back and got a 2360, so that has eased my anxiety momentarily.

Congrats! Btw, they make a Facebook page for you do once you’re accepted you should receive the link

there is also an alumni group for you to join after you have left so don’t worry about groups. but you probably will end up making ur own groups afterwards. @biovball, I also applied to a bunch of programs. I’ll be honest I was rejected from quite a few, but also accepted to some which included SSP. You have a great SAT score but still don’t slack off on the apps. Good luck!

Yeah, you wouldn’t need a diffeq class. I think we talked about integrating factors one day for some reason and then a little bit about fourier series. But physics C would be good to have.

4ier series

Which one is 4-ier?

2 is 4-ier. Lulz

lol wow Fourier series is taught at SSP? I thought I would be the only one to know Fourier Analysis material, Laplus transformation, ODE/PDE and etc…

@biovvolt, I’m applying to RSI, MITES, SIMR, MSU HSHSP, Rockefeller, SSP and NHI. not sure about anything else

It’s not that much in depth though

I decided to take the diff Eq class because it was the only one that could possibly fit into my schedule :frowning: I normally would take a community college course during first period, but AP Physics is only offered at that time. So I have to somehow take it after third period, which ends at 12:27, and volleyball practice, which starts at 2:30. Diff Eq was the only class offered at that time, and even then I will have to leave my third period (AP Lang) early.

I think I can try to take AP Physics C and astronomy online.

^that’s fine, lol I wouldn’t worry too much about which classes you’re taking as long as you challenge yourself!

…Yikes, you guys are freaking me out :stuck_out_tongue: I have NO research experience, I’m more likely to break a telescope rather than use it, and I haven’t even heard about Fourier Series yet :’( I really wish I could learn about these topics here, but c’est la vie.

I’m still going to apply though, with even more determination. This just shows how much there is to learn about the world, and from what I’ve read in the past four pages, SSP is an amazing learning experience :)

Yo chill out! I had no idea what they were either when I applied, and also had 0 astro or programming experience. They look for interesting and passionate people, not necessarily the super prodigies :)

Yep. Chill and enjoy your junior year. :)
