Summer Science Program (SSP) 2015

I didn’t get an email either… but since it’s on their website I guess we might as well spend a couple more days proofreading our essays :3

You might want to check your spam/junk mail box. I got all of the regular e-mails saying the form was completed, but strangely the extended deadline e-mail was sorted as spam!

Hi guys! how specific were your answers for short answer 1? like did you say something like “biology” or something like “cancer biology and nano medicine”?

Also, do you think putting a physics or programming topic would be more advantageous? I am really most interested by these topics but I happen to have pursued biology more just because of the resources/opportunities available to me. If I have only explored a topic by reading about it and discussing it with others, would it be better to talk about biology?

Thanks!

^^i did math, more specifically geometry as in proofs and stuff

I think bio is your best bet since you can talk about your experience with it better

Ok thanks. Also, how strict are the word limits? Do you guys think 633 for the 500 word one is way too long?

I have a huge problem. My teacher is telling me now that she doesn’t have the rec with her and it somehow disappeared. And being in the east coast I will most likely not have school due to snow. What do I do?

@skyisover You should probably overnight your application this afternoon with a note that you are sending it today instead of tomorrow because of the impending snowstorm (what state are you in?). You should also say that one of your recommenders has promised to give you their rec tomorrow which you will overnight as well - or if school is cancelled, you will see if they can email it to them (acknowledging the fact that they don’t normally accept emails that aren’t the complete application package).

Alternatively, you can get a school envelope before you leave school today and ask your recommender if they are comfortable in sending you a copy of the recommendation which you can print out, seal in the envelope, and send with your other application materials.

Lastly, you can ask if your recommender is willing to overnight the rec for you when they get home today or even tomorrow.

That’s all I can think of. If I were you, I’d call SSP and explain the situation and the impending storm storm, perhaps they’ll allow you an extra day or two. They are pretty clear about making sure you don’t have any missing materials and deem it your fault if you can’t get everything in on time so I would start with them or do #2 above. Good luck!!

So I actually did my letter of rec albeit a very bad one(she had only 10 minutes to write it). Do I have to send my science and math ones in a separate envelope because they actually just handed it to me for me to put in.

I would seal each rec in a separate envelope because the instructions specifically say that your recommenders should seal their recs in a envelope before giving them to you. Mine wrote their names across the back flap but it probably isn’t necessary.

Should I be worried when I actually included some family responsibilities for #6 even though I actually never told my teachers about them and they checked no for the broader context box of the letter of rec?

I don’t think so. I would imagine that the adcom would think that you are probably a private person and your teachers may not even know about your home situation. You sent in your app, all we can do now is relax and wait.

How long does it take them to update your application status? My materials arrived at the office last Friday, but I’m still missing all parts.

I sent it in two weeks ago all parts are in

@Newdle Mine got there last Thursday and everything was updated on Monday. I guess it might take longer since a lot of people are sending them in now!

@leoursa‌ Everything’s updated now :)… Thanks for the reply!

Best of luck everyone! If you’re accepted, feel free to ask me any questions about how to prepare/what to bring.

So my science teacher hasn’t given me my recommendation yet. Should I just send in the rest of my application with a note saying I will give my science teacher recommendation on monday, or should I wait until I get my science teacher’s recommendation (tomorrow) and then mail it in.

The applications were due today. They even extended the deadline from Feb. 27th to March 6th to make sure we had enough time. I don’t know what to advise you since they specifically state that it is “your problem” if you don’t have the teacher recs on time. They also say that they want everything in one package and not piecemeal. I guess if you live in a state affected by the snowstorms you could package everything tomorrow and send it for Monday delivery and claim you couldn’t get the package out because of the snowstorm. Still though, you had months to do this so I don’t know how receptive they will be to getting it. Good luck!

Having sent my application yesterday I feel my essays were totally awful ugh. It’s always after I send it that I get this feeling
