Summer Science Program (SSP)

There was definately someone from china at alumni weekend, I remember her talking about applying to US schools as an international and whatnot... So.. there have been people from China, but there were none at Ojai last summer.

Hi. I was wondering if someone could give me an idea of my chances...

High School Sophomore
GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.6 weighted
No APs freshman year. Taking AP Calc BC, AP Chem, AP Physics C, and AP US History this year.

8th Grade SATs: 800 M, 530 CR, 680 W
9th Grade SAT IIs: 800 Math IIC, 710 Bio
10th Grade PSAT: 235 (80M, 75 CR, 80W)

My school doesn't rank, but probably top 5%.
My recs will be good for sure, but my essays aren't going to be spectacular.

Most of my math achievements are from middle school:
-Mathcounts: 4th at regionals, 10th at states
-AMC 8 State Winner
-NJML State Winner

Science Achievements are from high school:
-Bunch of medals at regionals and states for Science Olympiad last year
-3rd place team in NJ for Science Bowl

Besides Science Olympiad and Science Bowl, I do math team (but I haven't had any significant accomplishments there). I also do Student Council and I do a lot of tutoring for community service. Well thats about it. Thanks in advance.

SSP doesn't accept many sophomores, but the website is actually more discouraging this year than in past years... You should definitely go for it, though! I went as a sophomore this past year to Socorro, and the experience is absolutely incredible- the worst thing is that you'll just apply again as a junior, if it doesn't work out this year. We had lectures on physics, programming, and calculus that started pretty much from square one, but because we're taught everything as tool for completing the asteroid determination, the applications are new to everyone. I think we all to some very large degree overwhelmed (hence the characteristic lack of sleep), but that's a big part of the program, and you learn to enjoy the feeling. As far as stats for applying, don't worry overly much. Put a lot into the essays, because you want to demonstrate why you'll enjoy six weeks without sleep but gaining incredible research experience.

Cranland.. I think I might know you, or we know mutual people..

Are you from Cranbury, and were you by any chance at mathcounts when you were in 7th grade or PUMaC 2006?

hey i was at pumac 2006!!

@cranland: i lol'ed at ur 8th grade SAT score

hi can anyone tell me my chances
umm there's no where to list activities so i'l just say the ones i mentioned

but im an asian female, junior

grades: 3.9uw, 4.4 w so far (not counting jr grades)
taking more APs than really possible (5 only..what)
physics b calc bc apush english bio
took 2 last year apush part 1 and envisci (got a 5)
psats: 235. 80m,80cr
sats: 800 bio 800 chem

ecs mentioned: varsity tennis captain
state bio chem awards
fbla nationals 2nd

essays: hate writing. ugh
great thanks!
recs: teachers offered to write a rec for whatever summer program i wanted to go to so must be OK?

lol, Narcissa, which team were you on?

And stats don't really matter THAT much, and your stats are definately good enough. :)

oh really cuz my essays SUCKEd i can't write tho im getting an A in ap english and nobody's done that since like 1824

lol i was on the Livingston High School team. we went as a team and got pwned. (altho we did have 2 ppl place in the top like 8 or something that was listed on the website. which suxed but hey, public school here!...and our genius val/harvard EDer/teen jeaopardy winner/USAMO/USAPHO etc did the proofs ^__^ )

u?

oh and this really sux cuz i have no clue what "good essays" are. cuz in my mind "good essays" are like what i'd read in, say, the new york times or Time magazine. do you guys write like that?!?#$?@?

PM-ing :)

I'll kind of give away who I am once I tell you so.. yeah.

right so uhh...chances? haha thanks. narcissa, lol at the sat in what sense? the huge difference between math and critical reading?

^ haha yep :)

oh and i think if u write good essays u have a great chance

it's quiet.

too quiet.

... no quacking allowed.

may i take this opporunity to remind you that you once agreed to work undercover for the Duck Cult as well? and didn't, i might add. :(

which puts you at number six in the hit list. :)

Hey, I've still got the Hit List, but I guess I'll have to make a few changes here and there.

you do that, wing commander. our number one remains, of course, the impeccable jp, right?

when did i agree to that?
or was it the fact that MY NICKNAME WAS THE DUCK BEFORE THE WHOLE CULT STARTED!!! and i absolutely do not condone this behavior.

hrumph. so your nickname was The Duck, eh? talk about irony. admit it, classof09, you are STILL a duck at heart. it's nothing to be ashamed of.

and wing commander, make sure classof09's name is notched up a few places in the hit list.

i want a Hit List.

Hey Z, guess what, classof09 wasn't even in our Hit List. But don't worry, any atrocious behavior against the Duck is not forgotten, and definitely not forgiven.

Btw, I would have thought that my non duck teammate would make the perfect prime target. Don't you think?
