Summer Semester and AP Scores

Hello. I decided that I would self study for the ap art history exam, however I just remembered that ap scores come in early July, while according to the college, the last date for add/drop is in the first week of June. Do colleges allow students to take core classes in a later semester? I really don’t want to take that class.

Thank you!

You’re a HS junior, so what college are you talking about? And what does the AP exam have to do with core courses?

Not clear on the question either, but here is what I think you are asking about:

AP exams are only scheduled for May. So if you are self-studying, you need to plan accordingly.

Yes, most colleges will allow students to take core requirements second semester (or even second year). A few colleges do have relatively tightly controlled core curriculum for freshmen, so you should check with the college you want to attend.

Or even 4th year. So it’s another one of those questions where “it depends” is the answer.

Why do you want to self-study for an AP test?

  1. Love to learn - great! Take the classes
  2. Want college credit? Fine…but make sure it is not at the expense of your regular HS courses or ECs
  3. AP Scholars award with distinction…this is cool and all…but is not useful for college admissions
  4. College Admissions…doesn’t help. Many people take AP tests senior year after they are already admitted. Colleges don’t generally take AP scores into account. They take your GPA/SAT into account
