Summer Seminar 2005!

Just out of curiosity...

Is any one here attending session 2 and flying out of Logan or Manchester? I know its an off chance, but I just figured Id ask...

yup..i'm going to session 2 and am flying out of logan or TFG

Does anyone know when we find out what workshop/classes we are in? I was looking through the letter but i didnt see any info on it, unless i totally missed it.

jq722- haha cool maybe we will be on the same flight!

When you get to summer seminar, you are given a schedule of your workshops for the whole week. The names of the classes aren't given, only the room number, building, and periods are listed, so you figure out which workshop it is when you get to the classroom.

Listed next to the class period on your schedule is a different number that corresponds to the group you march with to the classroom. After breakfast, you go to a courtyard outside bancroft hall where people are holding up signs with numbers on them. You look at the number listed next to the period on the schedule, and then head to the group with that number. For example, next to period 1 it has the number 15, so you head to the group with the sign that says 15, then you march to the classroom with that group. This sounds really complicated, but it's pretty easy to figure it out when you are actually there!!

I got most of the workshops that I ranked on my preliminary application, and a few surprises too!

Summer seminar was a great experience, and further influenced my decision to attend USNA!! :)

My SS class was a bit more on their own when it came to getting to the workshops... we were given what workshop it was, where it was, and what room it was in... we were then told when to meet back up with your own squad so everyone could make it to formation for a meal or drill practice, etc... It was tons of fun... I'm guessing that I was in the SS 1 or 2 years before you navychic09 but not sure... I went in the summer of '02

Awesome, thanks for the info! I can't wait to go! :-)

My stepson got a letter today but he won't be home til 7-8pm, and I don't want to open it! Just curious - should I be concerned if it looks like a regular envelope with just 1-2 pages in it? Or do they send the other materials (what to bring, etc.) separately? Thanks!!

When I got my acceptance...it was a large envelope. It came with a 1 page congratulation letter, 2 page what it actually was, and 3 pages of power of attorney stuff. So 6 pages all together.

Our S is going to NASS Session 3. USNA will provide transpo to/from Baltimore but not Dulles or Reagan National. Baltimore is significantly more expensive for us. Anyone know how easy it is to get transportation to/from either Dulles or Reagan National. Our son will be traveling by himself.

Super Shuttles is great, and what we used for our son's CVW trip from BWI, but it does not run from either Dulles or DCA to Annapolis. The best way (and this comes from getting our plebe back and forth) is to take the Metro from the airport (and it is right in the airport) to the New Carrollton station and then take a cab or arrange for a ride from New Carrollton to USNA. There may also be public buses that run from New Carrollton to USNA, but that could take a very long time. After Spring Break my Plebe was so tired he took a cab all the way from DCA to USNA and the fare was $70.00, but he didn't have to wrestle with his acoustic guitar and overnight bag at 2 in the morning that way.

The Metro does have a website and you can plan a whole trip, then print out or e-mail the itinerary just for peace of mind. Let me know if you have other questions about this.

I don't suggest Dulles because it is way-far away!

Im extremely excited to be going to NASS 2...any one flying out of Florida? Anyone perhaps staying for any camps offered in the summer mainly swiming or water polo?

SwimUSNA10... I am going to be inducted here in June but my sister will be attended the water polo camp the week before I-day... she's a bit younger though, just now in her sophomore year of HS so i'm not sure if you two would be doing the same camp but just thought I would let you know she is going

~Nick

Nick...you must be very excited to be getting inducted here in June!!! I just had a question for you b/c i seen that you received rejection letters...I was just wonder what they said as to why you didn't receive an appointment the first 2 times you applied...what did you do different to get an appointment this time around?!?! I'm doing the water polo camp along with my brother, who is only now in his freshman year of HS, the week running from June 26 through July 1. There is a good chance we are doing the same camp as your sister.

Hi. I turned in my NASS application on the week before the deadline. So I didn't get in because of limited space. However, I got an e-mail from one of the officers in the admissions saying that I got waitlisted. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I won't hear anything from them until May 15. Did anyone get waitlisted for summer seminar too?

Sincerely,
Hannah

I was placed on a waiting list, and contacted by Captain Leahy twice. I was told before I would be notified by the end of April, but the email stated 15th of May, TWO WEEKS BEFORE SESSION 1.....WOW!!!! Time sure flies. Any ohter waitlisted???
ZN

What was the second e-mail from Captain Leahy about? Mine said that I would recieve a final status by May 15 too. Do you really think that there would be kids who would not want to go to the summer seminar? Well I'm just glad they gave me at least a second glance. May 15 sounds soooo ffaarr away!

i recieved 2 phone calls and that email. believe it or not from certian posts, it seems like there are kids that go to SS that don't take it seriously, ie. skipping classes, showing up late, and all that... HOW CRAZY COULD YOU BE? Good Luck NAVGIRL
ZN

Also, some in the north east don't know if they will be able to attend due to exams etc. My son took several statewide tests in January, half way through the class to be able to attend as our school yesr isn't over until June 25th. Many aren't positive until they are a little further in the year. Best of Luck!

Email from Capt Leahy:

"Mike,

Thanks for the email. I don't have the waitlist ranked. Right now, it
looks like a slim chance that anyone will get pulled off the waitlist.

Capt Leahy"

owell...

ZeroNegligence... there are "crazy" people out there, I had a girl in my SS classes that all she talked about was how she wanted to come to USNASS just to see cute guys. I asked her if she had planned to apply the following year and her response was... "Yeah just to see if I can get in... but I probably won't stay past Plebe Summer." Seeing as how I didn't make it in that year nor the year after, that comment has stayed with me for quite some time now...
