Summer seminar B

I believe most of the people that went to summer seminar session A are going to come back today or tomorrow. I’m going to session B, and I was just curious as to if any of the people that went this week had any advice for packing. Did you over pack? under pack? Is there anything that you wish you had brought? Or just any general advice for packing would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

just got back from session A.

They really do give you a lot of clothes and stuff so you really wont need clothes on monday, tuesday, wednesday, or thursday. Of course, make sure you have your tan pants, because you need 'em. Chapstick would be a nice thing to have, since it is extremely dry there. I might have overpacked, but that's not really saying anything because i constantly think i overpack. Everything on that sheet was really all you need, so I would just cover everything on the list.

yeah.

Like shower shoes? The list says to bring it....but really...should I even waste the space?

I'll second that chapstick. The Academy during the summer gets very dry. You'll get very very dry lips, and nosebleeds so prepare for that.

yeah, i guess youre right. shower shoes are unnecessary. Sandals are pretty nice for the night and such. So don't bring shower shoes if you don't want them.

As long as you don't mind walking around barefooted or wearing shoes to the showers, no, you don't really need shower shoes. It's up to you though.

I think pretty much all cadets where some form of shower shoes at the Academy (at least in my squad they do), but I think we actually have rules about going barefoot in the hallways that you SS guys and gals wouldn't have. I'm not sure though. People just usually tell me to put on shoes even if I'm walking around in socks.

Eh, I'll just bring my sandals. They don't take up much room at all. I was just trying to get everything I need into a backpack and a carry-on so I don't have to pay to check luggage (you're first bag? That's crazy!). I could probably do it on the way there with no problem, but I know that I've got to have space to bring the stuff they give me back home. So, I might give up on that...

Yeah, sandals would be good enough.

I just came back from Session A. Make sure that you will have extra space in your luggage so that you can fit all the clothes and stuff that you are given and also to hold extra clothes you might buy at the C-Store or the Visitor Center.
A camera is really good to have, I got a bunch of good pictures and stuff. Alarm clock is helpful. A music source with speakers can make time spent with just the students of your element really fun. Poker chips and cards make for good bonding time too.
Most importantly, bring a good attitude. You'll need it a few of the times and it makes it a lot easier for other people to like you.

How was doolie for a day this year? It would be interesting to hear how its changed from last year.

Also, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to bring compression shorts or something of the like so that no one has to see what's under your shorts.

Doolie for a day was a blast! I heard it was going to be much easier than NASS but that wasn't the case. We had a basic style wake up and then PT for an hour wich if I counted right, 120 pushups in that hour (they said it was week 6 BCT PT). And then element challenge, a round robin and other stuff. I don't really want to ruin it for the kids going to Session B by giving details, but thats the just of it. A kid in a squad counted a total pushup number over 300 for the entire day. I'm sure my squad more than that cause our element leader loved training us :)

Best part of the day was by far taking the hill... Amazing. All of a sudden everyone was sprinting up that hill (one kid did get trampled pretty bad though) like they hadn't done any PT the entire day. That was one of the highlights of the day.

Have fun Session B!

Does it get very cold there at night? What kind of coat would you guys suggest?

I would recommend shower shoes pretty strongly. You probably don't need a coat but I'd recommend a sweatshirt or something because it may get a little chilly at night. Usually we have a thunderstorm around 3 pm, also.

So I'm going to session B tomorrow (pretty stoked) and I'm wondering what we should/are allowed to wear there? Do we do much on the first day of check in and such? Also what kind of 'casual' shoes should we bring? I have my running sneakers and then I figured a plain white pair of keds would be sufficient? Thank you!

I think you'll be fine with the sneakers and keds :) I just had white tennis shoes and a pair of flip flops for the shower, and that was fine.

When we went (and I suppose those who just came back from Session A will have more info, lol!), the first day involved a few presentations (e.g. falcons, dogs), and sports like soccer (total free-for-all), volleyball, dodgeball, and other very fun things. You meet kids, then when everyone has arrived, they introduce you to your element and leader, etc. etc. But really all you do is get your key, go to your room, drop your stuff, change to uniforms, and your name badge will have all your info.

You'll wear uniforms pretty much the entire time, so don't worry about clothes.

Plus, leave room in your luggage for all the free stuff that you will be lugging back home with you. I overpacked and had to cram everything in my suitcase.

haha oh okay sounds good! So i basically can wear whatever i want there & it doesn't matter. I'm so pumped! Less than 8 hours!

I would recommend slacks not jeans because those in jeans kind of stuck out a little. For those who went to session A, I am curious, did you do a "scavenger hunt" on doolie for a day?
