Since SS is coming up in about a month I thought that I should start a thread for those who have questions about what to bring, what we’ll be doing, etc…

I’ll start it off with:
- What should I do if I wear contacts? Will I be able to wear them/have enough time to put them in? Or should I just bring my glasses?
- What should I bring for the covering for the bed? I know I can’t fit a sleepingbag in my luggage, so should I just buy the thin fleece-like thing that they also say we can bring?
- I can’t exactly remember but isn’t there some hike thing you do if you get there on the first day before a certain time?

Also, for those who have been accepted to SS, have any you got a confirmation from USAFA after you sent in your registration package? I know mine got there, but just wondered if anybody else had gotten anything.

Did the registration packets we get have the answers to any of these?

1) I'm almost positive you'll have enough time to put them in. It's not like it takes that long. I would (and am) bringing both though, just in case.

2) From what I remember they say you can bring a "slumber bag," which is like a thin sleeping bag. Some thin linens would probably work too.

3) I haven't heard about this. Exactly how early are you planning on getting there.

4) I'm pretty sure I got a letter saying they got the money and I will be receiving no more letters from them regarding SS and if I have any Q's to call.

What Session are you going to?

Session A for me. 10 June here we come!

Linens should be fine. It's not like it's going to be very cold in the dorms.

Contacts should be fine. The schedules aren't that rushed...i.e. it's not BCT.

I did not receive any confirmation but I know that got it because I sent it by priority mail so that I could track it.

Does anyone know what the schedule is actually going to be like besides the workshops we signed up for?

zach: Yeah, I'll be going to Session A too. I'll be getting there at around 11:40 a.m.

sandie: I sent mine by priority mail too, so I know it got there, but I just can't remember if I got any confirmation in the mail.

you can definitely bring your contact lenses. mornings are pretty much yours to dictate. they give you an alarm clock, tell you what time you have to meet, and the rest is up to you. I know I got up at like five every morning to take a shower. I brought a fleece slumber bag and it was fine except it gets kinda chilly at night but the sweat pants they give you are pretty warm so you'll be fine.

-Last year, we got a confirmation email.
-Contacts are fine. You'll have plenty of time.
-In lieu of a sleeping bag, you can bring bedsheets. If I remember correctly, the beds at the academy are longer than regular twin beds.
-When you get there, you can play football, frisbee, volleyball, socialize, etc. They do supervise a hike, but I didn't go. The whole first day is pretty much free time since they're still waiting for everyone to arrive.

oh and don't worry about it too much. Summer Seminar is REALLY fun!

I'm going Session A.I'm really looking forward to it.
What physical activities do we do? I'm a little nervous about the altitude seeing as how I'm from sea level(San Diego, CA)
-Chelsea

27 days left! Maybe some of us CCers might get roomed together or something.

btw, sandiegogirl9999... I just realized that your name is "san diego girl" and not "sandie go girl." Yes, I'm a genius.

Hey, Im goin to session A 2, dang it kinda seems like every is! so anyone really bringin like clothes to sleep in or are yall just gonna sleep in the sweats? what time is everyone planning on getting there? oh ya, and is anyone stayin at the 'academy' hotel the night before, or am I the only one?

I'll be getting there that Sunday, so no I won't be staying in the hotel. Also I plan on just sleeping in shorts (probably the ones issued), never liked sleeping in pants much. :) CAN'T WAIT!

BAnglin08- I'm going to session A and staying at the Academy hotel the night before too... I'll see u there!

Going Session A too. I'm also a bit worried about the altitude. How intense is the PT and how big of an effect does the altitude have?

Jones, i recommend lookin at the thread below this one, it has a bit of info bout altitude...

We've heard from an ALO that just returned from a trip to USAFA that the Academy has totally revamped its Summer Seminar program this year. We didn't get a lot of details, but the bottom line seems to be that there will be more rigorous military activities to more accurately simulate BCT/4 Dig year. One of the comments that we've heard is that past attendees that have, for example, gone to both USNA's summer seminar and USAFA's have said that USNA's is more intense militarily and that the attendees have found more satisfaction with that type of program. It gives them a better sense for what can be expected, and it is what they are looking for in a Service Academy. My D is going to session A and older D enters June 28th! Good luck to all!

Hey, congrats to all of ya'll that got SS acceptances. SS is very fun, and it is a great opportunity to ask lots of questions, so don't miss the chance.

Someone in a earlier post mentioned expecting to not have much personal time during SS. As long as this year's schedule at least resembles last year's, you will have time to do what you need to. So if you are worried about contacts, hygien, that kind of stuff, don't be. You'll have time for what you need to do. Sometimes, you may have a fair amount of free time as well. Last year they gave us a one-page mini-contrails. There was also a small, 25 question quiz they gave us, and it required some good memorization of everything on the mini-contrails. Now, don't sacrifice all of your opportunities to talk to the cadets so that you can memorize the mini-contrails so well that you can recite everything backwards; you don't need to know it that good.

Someone also asked how much physical stuff they will be doing. Based off of what go navy81 said, they are making it a little more physically involved this year. We did do PT last year, but it wasn't that bad. The hard stuff was when we did something called Dooley for a Day. If they do it again this year, then you'll hear about it once you get there in mid-June.

And one parting word of advice: I wouldn't sleep in the shorts they give you, because you will wear them alot. Anyway, good luck to all of you, and I hope you enjoy it! I hope we'll get to see some of ya'll in 2008, too. Sorry for such a long post

Thanks for the info go navy81 and Falcons '11. Can't wait to get up to the Springs!

Im real excited now!! I had heard the SS wasnt as fun as some of the other ones, so it makes me happy that they are re-workin it, well, see a lot of u in a few weeks

Pilot2B- thats really cool, we should hang out, so we are not stuck in our hotel rooms that night!!!

Zach-Haha its not your fault my sn is a bit ambiguous

And I'm glad to hear that they are making the SS more rigorous

I'm not staying in the hotel...but I'll see you guys on the 10th!
