I got into UCSD as a transfer and will begin studying there this summer. I already signed up for Summer Session classes. The summer is split into two five week sessions. I am taking 4 classes. Calc 3 and Physics-Mechanics during the first session, and Vector Calculus and Physics-Electricity and Magnetism during the second session.

My question is this: Is this too heavy a workload to actually grasp the concepts and be successful later on in my engineering classes?

I would worry that these are your core classes, and done in an accelerated fashion can get you in trouble if you don’t fully grasp the concepts. So, this is a good question. Not being an ME I would definitly defer to an ME. Still, my advice would be to take courses that you might not necessarily need to build on in the future like statics, circuits, etc. (probably vector analysis would be fine in the summer).

But congrats on the transfer and best of luck.

If it helps any, I am an EE. The only reason I want to take them all this summer is so I don’t get caught later on not having prereqs done for classes that only are taught during one quarter, thus extending my stay at school.

There are a lot of distractions in San Diego in the summer. So you’ll have to stay focused and work hard every day. Also concentrate on really learning the subjects not just making the grade. In one way you are lucky that those classes are offered in the summer. I should also point out to others that UCSD being a UC is on the quarter system so it is not as bad as cramming a semester long class into 5 weeks.
