Where does your kid store their stuff for the summer? My S who went to Out of state also but had just three boxes of stuff to store for the summer and just put them in a friend’s garage but my D has accumulated stuff and there is no way we can haul it all back.
Is there a storage unit place close to campus for summer storage that anyone has used? What is the going rate for this?
Each house has storage. BJ, for example, has big storage rooms in the basement, you probably couldn’t fill those up if you tried - you can put 5 “boxes” (for any definition of box you want, lol) into it and just leave the stuff over the summer. A lot of people also store stuff in their (subletted apartment) or their friends apartment for the summer.
If you’re moving off you usually get the lease over the summer so people store their stuff in their apartment even if they aren’t staying in Hyde Park.
Https://www.uhaul.com/Locations/Self-Storage-near-Chicago-IL-60615/042109/ is what I’ve found off campus. Smallest space is $70 (a month, I assume). There’s also this: https://collegeboxes.com/storage-and-shipping.seam?school=universityofchicago&cid=125773 – which looks more like expensive (rates are per piece per term).
North apparently has individual storage cages – haven’t convinced my kid to get their dimensions yet. Provide your own lock IIRC. Rules say no furniture storage – how/whether that’s enforced, I don’t know (e.g. If a nightstand fits in a box and the box fits in the storage space…)
If you find other options, please post them.
@Goingnutsmom - check out online dorm storage companies that serve UChicago (easy google). You manage everything from your online account, order your boxes, they come and get your stuff at a designated date/time, and return your stuff to you the same when you return to campus. Two of my older kids use this option (different OOS colleges, different companies ).
This is assuming that your D can’t store her stuff on campus. THAT would be the easiest option of course.
I told my kids not to be expecting to haul their stuff back home! LOL. They can begin their adult life like a real adult and figure out where to store their belongings. Of course, I’m still the one setting up the online accounts, using the credit card, etc.
Edit/addendum: just noticed Collegeboxes in the post above. We are using them for D15 in Brooklyn.
Thanks to everyone for the ideas. Much appreciated.
