Does anybody have suggestions for summer storage? I don't have much to store, just bits and pieces that I don't need to bring home (comforter, sheets, electronics, etc.) Are there any storage units close to campus? How are their rates, security, insurance, etc.? I would prefer to use a storage unit rather than the pick-up services which charge significantly more.

I had the same question. Also, what do people with bikes do?

For the past three years I've used the American Self Storage on the other side of the 110 freeway. It's pretty easy to get to and you can load and unload your own stuff. The facility is a little grimy, but safe overall. Their smallest unit is a 5'x5' I believe, and will probably run you a little over $100 a month with the first month being free.

If truley only have a few things, it is probably cheaper to ship them to yourself at home for summer storage (a bike being an exception). Alternatively, look for a Los Angeles native who wouldn't mind holding on to a few of your belongings for the summer.

I am reposting this from a previous thread:
My daughter studied abroad last semester, and we needed to find a place to store her belongings. She did not have a car, so using a local storage facility would have been difficult. At the time, I called all of the local storage places, and one did offer the use of a truck. However, we ended up going with a company called "Door to Door Storage" (Door to Door Storage and Moving Containers) which worked out wonderfully! They deliver a locking storage "crate" and will give you up to five days to fill it. They pick it up, and haul it away to a warehouse until you schedule it to be redelivered. If your son does not have furniture, one crate would be plenty big enough for his roommate's things, as well. The price (including pick-up and re-delivery) was comparable to the local storage places, but this was much easier as it could be filled at a more leisurely pace and no vehicle was needed. My daughter lived in an apartment near campus, and the crate was parked in the street in front of her place. You would have to check with the housing office to see how long they would allow it to stay outside the dorm. I also noticed crates by "PS Storage", so you might want to check them out, too. Door to Door also sells moving boxes and supplies, which can be delivered when they drop off the crate. You order more than you think you need, and they will take back the unused ones. The price seemed fair--much cheaper than the people who sold them on campus. I had purchased a carton of Allied moving boxes from Costco, but was disappointed in the quality. They were very thin. Hope this is helpful. It must be hard to be so far away.

My S has always bagged everything in large garbage bags & left it with LA friends with no problems. He's a junior this year, so he has a 12-month lease & plans to be there this summer. D will lieave her stuff with him & perhaps some of her friends may as well. Some kids rent out space in their units to kids who will be gone over the summer so they can have a place to leave their stuff.

If you don't have very bulky or valuable stuff, it's not such a big deal leaving it behind with friends. I was ready to pay for S to store with some storage company but he's happy to have friends to have left things with.

graduatingmom- how much did the storage end up costing?? I was thinking about studying abroad at some point but wasn't sure how much the bill will end up being :/
Thanks@

Sorry, I can't remember how much it was, as it was a few years ago! It was definitely comparable to the storage units, but way easier. Also, it seems to me that they had some special price for USC students. PS Storage also offers those drop-off containers.

Am looking at the American Storage company by campus - is it cool enough in there to store electronics safely?

Thanks!

The self storage place appeared to be climate controlled when I was there. I picked up and dropped off things on some sweltering days last summer, and even the 9th floor was probably 75 degrees I would say. Just put everything it boxes to keep the stuff clean. Keeping electronics up off of the floor would probably be safe too.

Any thoughts on Dorm2Dorm? I got this on my usc email

I used the All-American self-storage place my first summer. I got two friends and we shared the space and split the cost. Ended up being around $50 for the whole summer.

I’ve been using a company in Southern CA. ship2storage.com my daughter had just a few boxes of stuff.

I used Storage Squad to store my belongings over the summer months and was very impressed with their service and pricing. They delivered free packing materials, picked up, stored for the summer, and redelivered to my new address this year. Very easy and affordable! They charge per box/item but everything is very reasonable. Ended up being cheaper than self storage since I only needed to store 5 boxes and a lamp. I didn’t have a car either! With the stress of finals it was nice to not have to worry about how I’m going to transport my storage.

If you are still looking, there are actually a ton of self-storage facilities all around campus. I did a quick search on SelfStorage.com to see what they had, and there are 80 facilities that showed up on there! Depending on the size, you could pay as little as $35 bucks a month to upwards of $100.

Our kids used storage places that allowed the 1st month free. One summer, they only stored for a month. This past summer, it was all summer. The prior years, don’t know what S did with his stuff–stored it with friends I believe & didn’t have to pay anyone. Some kids chip in together to get a storage place that they share. That’s what D did with her friends.

Let’s see every one of these threads going back to 2007 has been revived by two posters, each with 5 posts total, with a plug for Storage USC.

By some remote chance do “dedicatedsmith” and “Tkisch” have an interest in this company?

Oh and - we are using UCleaners, one of the companies recommended on the USC parents site.

Ucleaners.com and campusstorage.com will deliver boxes to your dorm room, and then collect them when you are ready. They will deliver them to you in the fall. They will store your bike as well as suitcases, etc. If you don’t have much to store, it is a good option, and incredibly convenient.
