Summer Term Experiences

My daughter was accepted to FSU yesterday for the summer term. She has other options, but is really considering starting in the summer at FSU because she likes the school so much. Anyone out there with kids who have already experienced this option? Did they like it? Was it a smooth transition into the fall semester? Did they keep the same room-mate in the transition? Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!!

Everyone I have talked to says it is great to start the summer term since they get used the campus and make friends without having to worry about rushing.

All FSU students have to attend for at least one summer term (or study aboard).

So look on the bright side, she will get her summer term out of the way early!

Undergrad students have to take 9 credit hours in the summer prior to graduation, but typically you’ll only take 6 credits in the summer semester when you start since the semester is only 6 weeks long. It’s actually quite an interesting situation for summer starters.

@Pasbal Thanks for your response, but what do you mean by interesting…please explain. And if you are on target to graduate do you still need to take 9 credit hours in the summer prior to graduation?

It’s an interesting situation because, if you start in the summer instead of the fall, you would either have to take 9 credits, or 3 classes, in that 6 week semester, or you’d have to take classes during a second summer semester.

It’s a requirement of all students, regardless of whether you’re on target to graduate or not. You have to take 9 credits during the summer semesters while an undergrad student, unless you can get the requirement waived (and you have to document a hardship that would arise).

I find it interesting because summer starters either have to attend for 2 summers, not necessarily a bad thing, or they have to overload themselves that first summer.

The requirement is just to take 9 credits during summer, not necessarily during the one prior to graduation. It’s to make the campuses less dead during those months when so many students are not enrolled in classes.

@ Pascal Thanks again for the reply We haven’t gotten any official info from FSU, but I read somewhere that starting Freshman only have to take 2 classes to start.

Clarify something. 2 classes in 6 weeks is pretty rough for a new person starting IMO. What is FSU’s actual requirement knowing they are coming right out of High School for number of classes minimum for the C session?

Can they just take 1 class in that last 6 week C Summer session? Or is 2 the minimum?

You talked about having to go 2 summers anyway, because 3 during the 6 week is about impossible and not smart I think.

So if you can take 1, ease into the school/program. Then the following summer sometime, take 2 classes to meet the requirement, seems a better option.

Thanks

Good questions, @Techlogik. I was hoping to find someone that has already experienced this…hope FSU will send more information on this. I’m sure you don’t take the toughest classes and read that if you don’t have credit for freshman English that has to be one of your classes (my daughter is in a dual enrollment at our state university so will already have fulfilled that requirement). Since I posted this my daughter has found some reviews from students who have started in the summer and have positive things to say.

Yes, heard similar things and happened to do a campus visit this past Summer, there were orientations going on and things on campus were pretty tame and ghostly. Some say that 6 hrs is required to be considered full time in Summer, but considering you won’t take 9 due to the 6 week period, ultimately not sure how they judge it that way considering you will need two Summer terms anyway.

Guess a call to admissions/registrar is required to get the facts.
