What are your thoughts, suggestions, and experiences with starting school your freshman year at FSU during the summer term? What are the differences/pros & cons? Any details I should be aware of? Thanks :)

personally speaking summer is the most fun semester, especially for freshman, you only have two class, the weather is pretty good, and everyone is trying to find friends…FSU during the summer is kind of like a big high school, where alot of freshman know each other…if you start during fall you experience FSU and the 40k other students, while football and tailgating is fun, the classload makes it alot harder to have as much fun as everyone does during summer.

I never saw FSU as a “big high school” and I attended a total of six years.

Summer is a hell of a lot of fun. Big high school is probably not the way I’d describe it, but you do meet a lot of people, the campus is less crowded (you can move your car Wednesday morning, and find a spot in the afternoon), and it’s a great way to get a feel for FSU before you take on your first full semester.

The only con I can think of is that class times are long. I took an Astronomy class over the summer that met three times a week for 2 hours and 10 mins. That was torturous… lol

Another con is that Bright Futures doesn’t cover it.

Starting college in the summer with the short term and usually only 2 classes is a great way to get your feet wet in college; you’ll get to learn the ropes and lay of the land at school ahead of the crowd showing up for the first time in Fall semester.

Two shortcomings are not getting the Bright Futures like Matt said above, and missing a chance to work extra weeks summertime earning money at a summer job.

our son started during the summer and our younger son will be starting at fsu this summer as well.

Being from out of state, the summer session was a new concept to us. Most students here traditionally start college in the fall, whereas in Florida many start in the summer. All of our son’s friends were starting college in the fall and he didn’t want to miss out on his “last summer at home before college”.

As it turns out, it was the best decision he could have made for all of the reasons already mentioned. Being from out of state and not knowing anyone at fsu (as compared to most in state students who may know a few people from their high school), the summer session was a great way to meet new friends and get accustomed to the campus. He also had enormous fun.

I think its a great way to start your college experience. If you think FSU is the place for you, I wouldn’t hesitate to start in the summer. If you do, you may even meet my younger son who will be there.

thanks everyone!
this makes me feel a lot better. Choosing the right college for me has been stressful especially since I’ve received every possible semester from 3 different universities (FSU-summer, USF-fall, and UF-spring) I’m definitely leaning more towards FSU now. I just think it has more going on for me. Keep the comments going I’d love to hear more! :D

Congrats on getting in! I got admitted for the summer but I asked them if I could go into the fall semester due to my current financial situation.

hm…I was thinking about trying to change to fall but summer doesn’t seem that bad…at least I’ll be a little ahead…

My son now a sophomore began/ was accepted in the summer. he was hesitant not overly happy as he felt like he would miss out on fsummer un with HS friends. turned out to be the best decision his words not just mine. it was a great way to meet new people and get the lay of the land. while his HS friends anticipated the changes for fall he already mastered the transition. his hs friends began saying i wish i could have attended summer session.

I’m glad to hear that blueskymom

now do you guys have any classes that you recommend to take for the summer of your freshman year? How many are you required to take?

You take two classes as the term is only 6 weeks. 2 classes/6 hours for six weeks is equivalent to 5 classes/15 hours for the usual 15 week fall/spring term. Your class will meet every day for the most part.

If you do not have credit from DE or AP, you will need to take ENC 1101, as that is required during the first term for every freshman. They want you starting out writing well. I recommend you do not try to take a math or science in 6 weeks. Look for a gen ed requirement to get out of the way, like a history, or a humanities or sociology/psychology. You will get advising about what to take during orientation. To start. Here is a guide. [The Florida State University](<a href=“New Student & Family Programs”>New Student & Family Programs)

[FSU General Bulletin](<a href=“Page Moved”>Page Moved)
Check out the multicultural requirements. A good thing is to take a class that meet the liberal studies requirements that are also and X or a Y class.

thanks. that helped a lot. do you know if AP scores come in before you’re suppose to sign up for classes? Also, when does class usually start (month)?

AP scores should come in time for Fall registration. You definitely won’t have them in time for Summer registration, so they tell you not to take any classes which you may receive credit for.

FSU receives your AP scores before you do.

so I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I need a term change…
I’ve realized that June 28 (only 24 days after graduation) is way too early to to move out. I really don’t like the idea of starting college at 17 and being financially unstable. How am I gonna sign my papers??? Anyway, how can I get switched to fall??? Any suggestions?

Call admissions and ask about how to make a term request change. And my daughter was 17 until mid fall term. There was never anything I needed to sign except the housing contract.

From what I understand making term change from summer to Fall is highly difficult and rarely is processed/allowed.

My son accepted-starting for this summer and looking forward to it. however he did apply for fall with SATs of 1360. We thought with those scores he would be accepted Fall. However when we called to just to inquire about Fall instead we were told this year’s class is very strong.

I understand it could be a financial burden, but please know older son had a wonderful summer experience. (as i said before)

Also there are a great selection of jobs available. Son has worked at the World War 2 Institute for two years where he gets to catalog artifacts and research. great learning experience. A friennd of his works at SOuthGAte as leaisng agent and she really enjoys that. Another friend who also started summer began a gig and still works for athletics as an announcer for the baseball games!

sweet! I’ve accepted the whole summer thing already. I even payed my summer housing deposit now do ppl usually come back home or stay on campus from aug 7 to whenever fall term starts?

Tina - Great, Glad to hear this!

I believe the dorms close so you have to go home or stay off cmapus…

My son did come home. And his brother will as well.
