Summer Ventures 2018

Hi, I’m trying to apply for Summer Ventures. What’s it like? How hard is to get in? Tips to get in? Can anyone help me with my essay? Btw they used the same essay questions from last year. Also, I apply last year.

@chanda21 hi! I went to summer ventures in summer of 2016— it is an amazing experience! SVSM had an 18% acceptance rate the summer I went.

Wow that’s really low. Can you see my chances of getting accepted

@chanda21 I think you have a good chance! I didn’t even have any standardized test scores. I am also Asian and I don’t think race had that much impact in the decisions. I think the essays are a very important part of the decisions as well as ECs. I had a lot of Science based ECs because I was interested in Science. I hope you get in! SVSM opened so many doors for me like Gov school, scholarships, and getting into schools like unc. It looks great in a transcript, but it is also so fun!

Thanks! I really hoping I get in! I applied for a summer program at UNC too!

@snowmenrsocool would u be able to read over my essay? If so, whats your email?

DM me! @Chanda21

I just DM u!!!

Hey! Wish I would’ve seen this earlier but probably doesn’t hurt to chime in now. I was a participant in summer ventures last year (2017) at App State (I was in the exploratory data analysis class, catalyst winner for my campus). The program is really well done and overall a great experience so if you get in, go for it! If you’re waitlisted, don’t worry! I know a lot of people who got in off waitlist (my research partner was waitlisted originally). There’s a good chance you’ll get in from that.
Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about the experience! Good luck!

I was accepted ECU!

I was accepted at ECU too! If anyone wants to start talking just DM me! Also, previous participants, what hall do we stay in and is thee anything we should know before the program starts?

Unfortunately, I got rejected for the program again but I hope you enjoy it! I’m planning on taking classes at my local community college instead to knock out some classes for my freshmen year at college

Hey, I will be attending Summer Ventures at appState this summer @k8allen and I will be doing Data Analytics. Do you have any advice or tips about how to write a winning research paper/get the most out of the experience?

Congrats to everyone!
To @03sj02 :

  1. The instructors for the class (same this year and last year) were awesome! They’ll help you so much so I’d advise taking them up on any help. They really helped me when I was designing my pilot study and writing the paper.
  2. Don’t stress about it (though this goes for anyone at any campus). It’s designed to be fun! Let yourself enjoy the experience without worrying the entire time. I spent too much time stressing and would’ve had more fun if I’d let myself relax even a bit. Even if you don’t have any statistics experience, don’t worry. I hadn’t ever taken a statistics course before coming to SVSM, and I was fine.
  3. Do take it seriously, though. A lot of people blew off the research paper and ended up with drafted papers they didn’t care about and can’t really use in research competitions or take to symposiums. You could end up conducting research that you could take far beyond SVSM.
Have fun this summer, and good luck!

For those of you applying to Summer Ventures, do you also plan to apply for NCSSM residential or online? My son’s first preference is definitely NCSSM residential and would not want to reduce his chances but if that could not work, then Summer Ventures would be great. I can definitely see how some are not interested at all in NCSSM but he has been for years…

Good luck!!
