Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (NC)

I don't know about prestigious. It's hard to find "prestigious" programs in NC period. But, Summer Ventures is VERY good, and it looks wonderful on your college app. ALL of my friends had an absolute blast there last summer. But if you're looking for something at a prestigious college, you could try Yale or Harvard or Stanford, as they all offer summer classes - but of course, they also come with a wallet-busting price tag. :(

leetx, I personally don't know much about prestigious summer programs a lot, u can try the UNC website and Duke, plus can give the link/more info abt boys state and legislators school? (governor's school is that what ur talkn' abt?)

just google them, you can find it. NC Legislators school
I just learned that SVSM summer ventures does not accept current NCSSM student, why is that?

Usuallly the free or state funded programs like summer ventures, governors school and tasp are the best ones. Does anyone know more of these?

I attended Summer Ventures 2 years ago and had a blast. Last summer I attended the Research Apprenticeship Program at Chapel Hill. Got a 1000 dollar stipend as well. I got to work under someone at the School of Medicine. I highly recommend it. However, I think funding may have been cut off. Check http://www.med.unc.edu/oed/rap/ to see if they get funding back.

what about the Duke cancer center one - i heard that one is SUPER hard to get into.
Was the UNC research thing selective?

The UNC thing accpeted like 20 so i suppose so

NCSSM wants a varied group who hasn't got the facility to attend such programs, NCSSM students aren't eligible since they don't need that experience which they probably get all thru the year!

whatever all my friends who got accepted to NCSSM went to Summer Ventures. Fact.

You can go to Summer Ventures the summer before your Junior year even if you are accepted at NCSSM because you aren't considered a student at NCSSM until the 11th grade.

whats the best way to ensure you get into summer ventures. Theyre not THAT selective, are they?

I said NCSSM students NOT the students who were admitted to NCSSM (the sophomores). Summer Ventures, hmm......I applied for that this time, unfortunately, well, I don't really know abt this a lot since I haven't see a lot of students knowing abt this. But since both sopho and juniors all around the state is selected, juniors MIGht (I am simply guessing) get some advantage due to their more courses in m&s as well as other stuffs. I heard like they only take some 550s. So, that wouldn't be really easy either. Let's just keep our fingers crossed! what if someone is accepted to SVSM and NOT to NCSSM!!! I always have a premonition like that may happnen to me! (that'd be a REAL disaster!)

I'd say that as long as you consider yourself a straight-A student (MAYBE one or two B's) then you're fine. Thats pretty much the "profile" of everyone who was accepted last year. Some were pretty involved with the school band, but beyond that...nothing too extraordinary.

waoh! that was surprising! I guess a lot of juniors apply to this program since they r more mature and academically enriched (having more science and math classes).

When I went to Summer Ventures most were rising juniors, but that may be due to the appeal of Governor's School when one is a rising senior.

egghead9033, do u think SVSM made a big difference in ur life? Like u've learnt a lot of stuffs both academic as well as social from there?

Hey, I applied to Summer Ventures, but I'm not too sure how selective they are. I have a 4.7 gpa, 180 psat score (not too great but eh), and no real awards/extra curricular activities focused on science or math. I applied for the hell of it, but it sure looks like I don't have much interest in science or math because of my ECs. I really do enjoy Biology and other sciences, so I hope I get in.

rising senior

yes asifkhan.... i would agree

4.7 Gpa, on what scale?

cubsfan - i wouldn't worry too much about this. 4.7 is a VERY good gpa, and 180 PSAT is also above average. SV isn't THAT selective! i've seen people with lower stats than yours get in.

"4.7 Gpa, on what scale?"

6 points for AP, 5 points for honors, 4 points for regular classes
