first of all, thanks to taben1112 for answering my question :)

also, @nate42: if you make it to both ssm and svsm can you can only choose 1?? or can you attend both???

edit: and, does anyone know how applicants are selected? is there affirmative action?? also, do you have to have science credentials (like science olympiad)??

From the SVSM admissions page: High school sophomores who are admitted to both Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics may attend SVSM prior to their junior year at NCSSM.

If you are CURRENTLY a student at NCSSM, you may not attend SVSM (meaning a current NCSSM junior cannot attend SVSM). However, some state that if you are sophomore who is accepted at SVSM and NCSSM you can go to both because you are not technically a NCSSM student until you enroll there in August (at which time SVSM is done).
vs.
However, as Nate said, we were told that if you get into NCSSM and accept the spote then you should not/cannot attend SVSM…

But I also thought I heard NCSSM students say at Discovery Day that they attended SVSM also. I may or may not have a definitive answer to that question soon (April 16 - hopefully).

Just for clarification of status for alternates, and additional information for finalist, the following is now on the SVSM page:

Understanding Your Status:

•Finalist- Student has been accepted to participate in the program this year.
•Alternate- Student has been accepted only if space becomes available. As Finalists decline, the SVSM Director will notify student that he/she has been offered an invitation to the program. Finalist must notify us by May 4th of their decision to accept our invitation.
•Not Selected: Student has not been accepted to participate in the program this year.

Please note: Notification letters, mailed April 5th, include campus assignment and program dates.

@chaeyeong94: Wow, a lot of people have became alternates. And I know 5 finalists who are going to decline. There will be a ton of people who get into NCSSM as well and will have to choose between the two.

I am a finalist- going to East Carolina. Let me know if we will be at the same campus.

In regards to whether NCSSM students can go to Summer Ventures, their website states clearly that you can go the summer before your junior year.

“So that SVSM may serve as many students as possible, no participant may attend for more than one summer. High school sophomores who are admitted to both Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics may attend SVSM prior to their junior year at NCSSM. Students may also apply to both SVSM and the Governor’s School. Students accepted to both SVSM and the Governor’s School must choose between the two. However, former Governor’s School participants can attend SVSM.”

I am relieved because I have applied to both and was worried about this last fall.

If you love cool summer temperatures, beautiful scenery, and lots of fun stuff to do, you will love Boone. Actually wanted to go there instead of East Carolina, but just glad that I got in.

Mich5225: Awesome! I am still waiting on my letter to come in the mail! Just curious, what part of the state are you from? I am from the mountains.

I am from Davidson County- Lexington area. I want to attend Appalachian for college- 3rd generation App student, but ECU is better than nothing.

@mich5225: Ah I see. I have heard APP’s summer ventures is one of the best. Since I only live 45-60 minutes from it, I would rather go somewhere like ECU or UNC-Charlotte. But nonetheless, congrats! I will post where I am being sent as soon as the mail comes in.

Thanks for rubbing it in that I didn’t get into Appalachian, but all is okay. My grandparents live about 45 minutes from ECU and it will give us an excuse to go visit more this summer.

What program(s) are you interested in at Summer Ventures? I really want Computer Science since I want to work for the Department of Defense in Cyberterrorism.

Saw your post under the Chapel Hill thread and your stats. Very impressive and your high school course offerings are similar to my own. I come from a school with only 415 students. Always having to think outside of the box to pick up more challenging courses.

@mich5225: Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to come off as rubbing it in.
I signed up for the Medical program as my first choice on the application. It is my dream to become a doctor. As Radiologist who specializes in Oncology to be particular.

That sounds like a awesome career! Haha my school offers a networking class for computers and the stuff they do blows my mind. You must be really smart to want to go into computer science.

Also, thanks! My school has 1000 or so students and yet we only offer 5 AP’s.

JUST IN: I am being sent to UNC Charlotte, July 8th until August 4th!

Congratulations on the Summer Ventures acceptance. UNC Charlotte feels so new and state of the art. Should be awesome. At least you get a tiny break beforehand- I have to be at ECU June 17. I get out of school June 3 since I am exempt from finals- go to HOBY on June 7- Summer Ventures June 17. I will finally get to catch my breath after July 14.

Even though my school is small, we offer 8 AP classes. Our science and social studies departments rotate their offerings so you get the chance at everything, but they can still make it happen even though we only have 3 teachers in our science department. This also allows them to fill the classes since they can pull students from 2-3 grades instead of just one. Really pretty smart for them to do. With the new state math requirements, though, we can only offer one AP math and that is Stats AP- that is why I am taking Calculus at our community college since it is required for my college major. Don’t have enough teachers to offer Intro Calculus/AP Calculus.
