Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics?

I was an alternate for ECU… but today I got a letter saying that I am going to ECU!!! I got accepted for summer ventures… I am so happy… I thought that I was going to be rejected :)

@Iceindian101- I am going to ECU as well. What classes are you taking? I am taking Alternative Programming, Engineering, and Physics.

@mich5225: I am taking Problem Solving, DNA Fingerprinting, and DNA Fingerprinting.

The SVSM site is now updated and very clearly states:
“High school sophomores who are admitted to both Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics residential program may not attend SVSM prior to their junior year at NCSSM.”
So, that clarifies that!

Just moved from alternate to finalist with SVSM at ECU. Placed in Archaeology and ???( a computer class I think).

Archaeology was not really on her radar, but is preferred over a math based class. Still do any of you know anything at all about the Archaeology course at ECU???
We are thinking outdoors, digging, sweating…not a very enlightened view. So what is part of it beyond that?

@taben: I have heard it’s a great course. But I would imagine the summer heat in Greenville would be a bit unbearable. Im pretty sure it is in the morning to reduce the temperature a little though.

@taben ECU has a really good archaeology program; so, the class should be great! About the weather, Greenville usually has humid and insect-infested summers, but the winter was really mild this year. I highly recommend bringing personal cooling equipment: handheld fan, spray bottle, hats, sunscreen, etc. You will need them!

I’m really hoping to get the acceptance letter this week…everyone please wish me good luck!

@chaeyeong94…which location are you an alternate for? App says on the web site that because of additional money provided by the state, alternates should be getting offers. ECU told our daughter’s friend the same when he contacted them about whether, as an alternate, he would likely get a spot. So, I would imagine that if it is the case that most alternates are getting in at those spots, it would be the same at the other locations.
It does not hurt to email the site director to let them know that you are thankful to be an alternate and really hoping to get in. Maybe they can give you some sense of where things stand?
I hope you get it!

UNCC! I’m planning to send an email like you said taben1112. Thank you for the suggestion. That’s a good idea!

@chaeyeong: I will be at UNCC as well.

@chaeyeong94: Good luck!!! Hope you get in! :)

hello everyone, just wanted to say i got into summer ventures as an alternate. i’m going to uncc. really excited to meet everyone there :)

just thinking, what classes should i take? i’m taking ap bio right now in school, already took honors bio and honors chem. i’m also in ap calc abbc. based on the course description guide the applied math courses seem pretty easy, but i can’t be too sure of that haha :stuck_out_tongue:

i’ll not be taking field biology or rocks and minerals for sure, cuz i dont plan on majoring in those at college.

also, i saw a lot of ppl who are currently at ncssm but were in svsm facebook groups.

(i wish bobcats played in the summer. i actually wanted to see if they suck as much as ppl say they suck. lol

i also want to see the panthers, they rock XD)

@funsummer: This is what I signed up for:

Topics in Biology

Field Biology and Ecology

Optical Engineering

A Real World View of Applied Math and Statistics

I really do not wish to be put into a math class. We have the same class for 5 hours a day so let’s hope we like what we are assigned to. The main reason I put Topics in Biology first is because I will be taking AP Biology next year and it will be a great review.

I’m kinda disappointed with their course offering though, no Chemistry or Medical classes…

I got an email saying that I will be getting a letter soon inviting me as a finalist!!! I’m so glad I contacted them…and really excited.
@Nate: yeah, that’s a longgggg time. I will put up what classes I’m offered to choose from.

5 hours does seem a pretty long time at first. i’ve taken math classes 5 hours long. theyre actually not too bad if you enjoy the problems.

i might wanna take the optical enginnering class cuz we prolly learn some of the math stuff in ap stat or so

@chaeyeong: Yeah, I agree. And I’m pretty sure the course offering is the same for everyone.

@funsummer: I’m hoping you’re right. 5 hours in a class we don’t enjoy seems a bit unbearable. I think the optics class sounds interesting as well and I will be taking Physics next year so optics will be a big help.

@Nate: oh really? I thought it was based on the topics that we selected during the application process…oh well!

chaeyeong94: I can tell you, regarding course selections, that for our daughter she got one course she selected on the application, and another that was clearly deadlast in terms of her interests. However, she was moved from Alternate to Finalist and, like you, is not complaining.
I think it would make sense that those who were Finalist out of the gate would be more likely to get their first choice(s) with classes and alternates would be fit in to classes as available.
It is great that the funding came through so that Alternates are getting in this early, rather than having to sit and wait and hope that others turn down the spots!

T

@chaeyeong: Nope, not at UNCC. It’s that way at the other universities though.

@taben: I only have two options that I originally signed up for, two biology classes. The rest are math classes and a optical engineering class that seems pretty interesting.

When I contacted an advisor at Charlotte, she stated that we shouldn’t expect to receive our 1st choice or even our 2nd choice. This is due to fact of limited course availability and high demand for some of the classes.
