Ok, so when I set up the account at Suntrust they took my FSU card and put it through a machine to assign it a pin nmber which I made up. Now I got a visa check card in the mail with a seperate randomly generated pin. So what was the FSU card pin for?

I seem to remember creating a pin for the VISA Check card as well, and it not being random generated.

Anyways, your FSU Card acts as a bank debit card. Your VISA Check Card serves essentially the same purpose, but also can act as a credit card and is accepted at a lot more places. If you’re using your FSU Card as a debit card (accepted on campus, anywhere a bank debit card is accepted, including many places in Tally), you will use the pin your created for your FSU Card. Most people do not use their FSU Card as a debit because the Visa Check Card does the exactly same thing and is accepted all over the place.

It’s been a few years for me now, but I had the same thing - I created my FSU Card PIN in the machine in the branch, but was sent a random PIN in the mail for the Visa Check Card attached to the checking account. Both cards are tied to the same account - though many places will accept the FSUCard as a debit, there were some that did not around town.
Out of habit, I began to primarily use the visa check card because I knew I could use it anywhere.

Also, you can go into the branch and reassign the PIN on one of the cards so they are identical. Just one less number/password to have to remember.
