SUNY Albany reputation?

Hi everyone! I'm a high school senior and I'm considering attending SUNY Albany. I applied early action and got in. I'm looking to go for business or communications, not entirely sure yet. I visited the campus and I liked it, I know some people say it's "ugly" but I really don't think it is at all. If anything, I like how urban it is compared to most other colleges. Anyway, the one thing that has bothered me throughout my college search is the reputation Albany seems to bring with it: the "party school" reputation. I've seen a lot of people complain about how wild the parties are and all that, how loud it is, how people drink all the time. I'm not saying I don't want to have fun or anything, but I don't want to get involved in any of that wild, crazy stuff that people seem to be saying about the school. Personally, I feel like all those reviews I've read are probably a bit exaggerated; every school has it's far share of parties, what makes UAlbany any different? Plus, Albany's a big school, I'm bound to find a few nerds like myself, right? So, mainly addressing people who have attended the school, do you think Albany lives up to that whole "party school" reputation?

I am also a high school senior only I want to go to CNSE at UA. Something that has really turned me off to wanting to go (although I may still) is the Kegs n’ Eggs thing. It is really a huge disgrace and makes me not want to be involved with anyone in the videos (it looks as if there are hundreds of students involved). It really shines a bad light on the school. Even though I know there is a better side to the student body, this is what the public sees and how reputation is judged.
As a current freshman I highly recommend UA. It’s an awesome school and I have gained a lot from just the first semester. I’m happy I decided to attend UA.

The “party school” reputation is more of a joke then anything. Students think it’s cool that there is the image that they party a lot and they pass that mentality on to sources like the Princeton Review, who in turn say UAlbany is a “party school”. Yes, there are parties, but there are also a lot of serious students here that accomplish a lot. Every school has parties, you’re not going to be able to avoid that going to college.

What I would recommend for you is trying to get into honors housing. You get better classes, can register earlier for classes, and live in a more serious study environment. A few people I know living in honors housing got 4.0’s this semester. Some of the kids do have fun to so don’t be worried about that stereotype about honors kids never leaving their rooms.

As for Kegs and Eggs… there is a lot of misconception about this and hardly anyone knows any of the true facts surrounding it. All they know is what they see in the YouTube videos. A few hundred students were involved and although there were a good amount of UAlbany students involved, a good number of St. Rose students were there as well. It’s a shame that UAlbany had to take the full blame for it. It’s a sore subject and shames a lot of people at UA. An extremely small percentage of UA students were involved and although it was a huge event, the media made it seem one hundred times worse.

All in all, UA is a great school. I love it here. You can get involved, theres over 250 clubs. And it’s really easy to meet new people. If you have any more questions just message me.
