SUNY Bing or Geneseo...

Well, I'm just not sure where I want to go and if I can get in to either.

I was at Hofstra as a freshmen and got a 3.89 GPA then transfered to a CC for financial reasons. I'm not done with this semester, but will hopefully (if I can get this last load of work done well) have a 4.0.

I originally was an accounting major at Hofstra, but then thought I'd rather do something with English and go to Law school. Now, because I'm unsure about Law I think I'm going to do the Accounting thing again. I have a general interest in it and it doesn't hurt having lots of opportunity after college with it (and hopefully a CPA).

However, can I get in to either schools? And what are some pluses and minuses to each? Also, if what would be a good safety school for me?

Either way, I think I'll be staying an extra semester to get 150 credits done for my CPA (it's needed). I would think about doing a minor if I were at Generseo since I like their english classes (writing ones)... do minors actually mean anything at all? At Bing there really don't seem to be many. However, Bing has a Finance major, which has the exact same curiculum as accounting, just 4 finance courses extra (and accounting has accounting courses obviously). So, I could even do that, maybe.

Where should I go? Where can I get in? And any other advice you guys might wanna give me?

Oh and I only wanna go to SUNYs because they are cheaper, so out of state schools are outta the question (as are CUNYs since I don't want to be in NYC because I'd likely then live at home).

Help is appreciated, thanks.

Oh yea, and I want to go to the school which recruits people to Big 4 Accounting firms. I know Binghamton has recruits from PwC, but does Geneseo have any of the Big 4 coming there? If not, that really makes me lean towards Bing...

Not that I'm accepted to either yet anyways, just contemplating.

SUNY Binghamton is the best Univ. within the SUNY system. It has a pretty good rank, within the top 100.

Binghamton>Gen.

Collegekid, I chose to apply to geneseo over binghamton early in the fall. No single school is right for everyone and being higher up on usnews rankings should not be the sole deciding factor. Honestly, I don't know where the accounting program stands at either school. You would have to inversitgate around and see which school offers the best resources and opportunities for students in this field. As sunies, both schools are definitely two of the best in the system. Bing students, however, appear to be awfully forlorn and to lack school spirit. Mainly, I hear complaints about a withering/ugly campus and an aloof student body with no pride for the school. Bing has also dropped on usnews from last year. When it comes to geneseo, I have only heard positive things: the students seem content and are very friendly. Also, geneseo has a liberal arts college feel with a smaller student body and prettier campus. In conclusion, though bing might be stronger for your major, geneseo will probably provide a better experience. Since they are at the same level when it comes to repute, you still have to gather more info from current students and other sources. I don't think getting in at either school is difficult, unless your application/recommendations are weak.

Good luck!

If you want to do business/finance/accounting, all that money stuff; best bet is Binghamton. My uncle did his undergrad in the school of management, and now he makes six-figures. (he only did 4 years, no grad school.)

you cant talk about bing being higher than geneseo on the rankings, they are ranked on different lists, as geneseo is not a phd granting institution

^^^ True story

you'll get into binghamton no problem. Hell, I got in with a 3.85 - without really applying. I was planning on sending in a bunch of stuff, but they had my transcripts avaiable really early so i sent them in to both Bing. and SUNY Buffalo - I receieved acceptance letters from both only a few weeks later. I hadn't even sent out any essays, recommendations, high school stuff, SAT stuff, ACT stuff, current course evaluations - nothing!!!

My preference would be for Geneseo. Binghamton is said to be the 'best' in the SUNY system, but the place just seems miserable. In NY, Geneseo has an equally strong reputation, though is more focused on the liberal arts than on things like hard sciences and engineering. I know many students at both schools, and the ones at Geneseo love the place while those at Bing. can't wait to graduate. I dont think you'll have any trouble getting into either.

Thank you so much for all the replies.

I will say one thing, experience/social-wise, I'd rather go to Geneseo. Two friends that go there really enjoy it and I've only heard good things about the school in this respect. Binghamton is obviously another story...

However, is it that bad? And considering their business definitely seems better from what the schools websites and brochures themselves say (Bing gets recruits from a Big 4 firm), then should I go there for that matter alone... guess it's my choice. Yet, I'm not sure how much better it is and not sure where to look for that info (it's important to see who recruits from Geneseo, because I'd be interested in working for a Big 4 firm in NYC after graduating and hopefully attaining my CPA).

Another kinda huge difference is the 4 credit classes vs 3 credit classes. I would basically have to take 4 classes every semester at Bing so I didn't go over limit (18), while taking 5 at Geneseo doesn't even match those credits and could take 6. Wouldn't that be a lot more work? I think it'd be easier to handle 4 classes than 5 or 6 just because it'd be focusing on less subjects (regardless of the amount of work totaly), you know?

Either way, I'd be taking relatively the same credits at both schools with the courses I'd look to take... double major acc/fin at Bing and acc with eng/phil minor at Geneseo.

Right now Bing is in the lead simply because if I do well in my accounting classes (also get to take some interesting finance classes which they don't offer at Gen :( ) I can easily be secured a job at a Big 4 firm because they recruit from Bing. If they don't recruit from Gen... well that makes things much harder for me.

Anyways, so if people know anything about the business program and the recruiting stuff at Geneseo, I'd appreciate any information.

Oh, and also, what would be a good third school to apply to? Buffalo? Albany?

i wouldn't look at the Bing. or Geneseo website for info about placement into firms or even into grad schools. When I went on the Bing. info session, they were just thrilled with the fact that they send students to Harvard and Yale law - when, in reality, they send about one student Harvard Law on average every 3 years. Far from impressive. Most of it is just hype to get students like you to go there over other schools who dont make this information readily available.

Go to the "big 4" websites themselves and see what they're doing for recruitment. Dont forget, just because they dont recruit at one particular school doesn't mean you wont be able to get a job there. You may even want to call up one of the recruiters at the firms and ask them about your dilema, they may be able to help you out a bit.

For a 3rd school, I'd do buffalo, no doubt.

hey it all depends. do you want to make more money later on or be happy for two years?

Geneseo is definitely a more happier place; binghamton is absolutely dreadful most of the time, but you'll more way more money.

weigh it out yourself, it is only 2 more years :P

i don't think there's tangible data that says you'll make "way more" at Binghamton
