SUNY Binghampton

Looking into that college. Can anybody provide some info? Especially about business major. What are the requirements to get in? As much info as possible would greatly appreciated.

It's Binghamton without a "p" but maybe someone should look into changing that so it sounds more optimistic as in, "I'm going to the Hamptons for the weekend."

Very competitive admissions; but they might have lower standards for out of staters since there are very few of them.

Checkout Binghamton University

Thank you for timely correction. I already checked that site. I would love to get some "real" info about Binghamton

As far as SUNY schools are concerned, it's probably the most selective university in the system. With Geneseo being the most selective college. A lot of people like to compare the two, but you have to remember that Binghamton is a large state university (though it's not as large as say Stony Brook), and it's considered one of the best public schools in the northeast.

From what I've heard, people are fairly happy there. It's got a pretty intelligent student body, with lots of active clubs and organizations on campus. A large portion of the school comes from NY, especially Long Island and other regions upstate.

I wish I could comment about life on campus, and the like, but unfortunately, that will have to wait until this upcoming fall. =)

If you have any questions about the application process though, feel free to ask.

I have a few questions. 1 - What are GPA ans SAT requirements for admission? 2 - How's their School of Management? It's shown in Business Weekly as a business school. My d is interested more in International business. And, oh yeah, we're from neighboring state of PA. According to maps it's a long ride from LI.

You should check out Binghamton's website then go to SOM and you will find the stats info. The SOM is very competitive ( also check out the Binghamton school forum on this site for ideas of the stats students had who were admitted this year). I believe their website states they accept 300 freshman a year to SOM.

Also, check out collegedata.com ( for any college, actually) You can type in a school and see who is getting in and what their stats are. If you click on any individual and see where else they may have applied, what merit money they got what their ECs are. I find it a very helpful website.
Visited with our son last August, students seem happy, but there is not much to do in the vicinity and freshman cannot have cars. Campus is all modern buildings. Binghamton is a long way from LI. But the school actually has a bus that goes to LI every weekend and makes stops all along the Island. But if you are from PA, you could well be closer to the school. It is close to the border of NY and Pa.

How's winter weather at Bing?

^not a good day to ask!! lol....October snow predicted for tonight and tomorrow......

They're predicting a chance of snow in Philly today might postpone a World Series game for another day. I want to know how bad it is in Binghamton in the winter. We only see a little of snow here.

Average High/Low Temperatures for KBGM : Weather Underground

Check out the charts....

jb12, you picked the wrong day to ask about winter weather up here! I'm a current student, and looking out of my window, it's snowing. The ground is warm enough that it won't stick, but today is pretty miserable. I'm told that there isn't really much snow during the fall semester, that the spring is worse for snow, but both are cold, especially when it's windy. It's my first semester here, though, so I can't verify that.

If people have any questions about campus life, I'd be happy to try and answer. I'm a transfer student with second semester sophomore standing (should be a junior, I'm a semester behind), I'm involved with several activities on campus, and I live in the dorms.

We are interested to send our D to Bing, however there's not much info about the school, except, that this is pretty good school. I would take in consideration a school life since it's located in a small town. Weather is important, we're not used to cold weather in the winter.
P.S. We got 2-3 inches of wet snow. The World Series game was postponed again, however, it's pretty much on for tonight, even thaugh it's going to be c-o-o-o-l-d.

We got around an inche here, I think. I didn't expect it to stick, I was surprised!

As for campus life, I am a first-semester student (though in my third year of college, I'm a transfer), and I love it here. I was afraid that getting involved would be difficult, but it was really easy to find activities that interested me. I'm writing for the alternative on-campus magazine, learning to be a DJ at our radio station WHRW Binghamton, and I'm highly involved with the Women's Student Union. I'm also a member of the on-campus food co-op, an alternative grocery store which sells vegan and vegetarian food, and more healthful snacks than the dining halls. I'm thinking about joining the Irish Student Union, as well. I've made great friends through the organizations I participate in.

There's just so much to do here, if you look. We have about half a dozen student publications, a TV station, the radio station, club and intramural sports, ethnic and cultural clubs, service organizations, religious organizations. Hillel and Chabad are both huge. The Newman House/Catholic Students Association is smaller, but active. There are also various non-denominational Christian groups active on campus. The school hosts really cool lectures and debates. This year for homecoming we had something called "The Great Porn Debate", where Ron Jeremy and a recovering sex addict answered questions from the audience. Later this month, Howard Zinn is coming to speak as part of the SUNY Social Justice Conference, which Binghamton is hosting.

A daily email is sent out telling students what organizations are having meetings, bake sales, special events, and things like that. If you read it, you'll realize that there's no shortage of stuff to check out.

Binghamton is a little larger than a small town. It's a former industrial city where a lot of the industry has left. It can feel a little shady sometimes, but there are plenty of cool places to check out in the city, too. There are both buses run by the school, and by Broome County Transit. It can be confusing to figure out the schedules at first, but once you do you have a lot more freedom to explore the area. On the first Friday of every month, the downtown area stays open well into the evening, the local galleries introduce new exhibits and open their doors to everyone, and it's a really festive atmosphere. It's a lot of fun. Binghamton is trying to revitalize its downtown area, and I understand it's nicer and nicer every year.

If you have any more specific questions, I'd love to answer them!

Do most kids stays on campus on the weekends? How hard to get from Binghamton to cities like Philadelphia, that's where we're from? Is it really difficult to get to school specially to School of Management? What are the requirement to get in and I mean not the only ones posted on the Bing's home page?
So we got more snow that you did? Our is almost gone by now. Only toppled trees are left from yesterday's storm.

A lot of kids stay on campus or at least in the Binghamton area on weekends. I'm not sure about getting from Bing to Philly. I know several students who participate in ride shares (1 student drives 3 or 4 others who each pay $30 or $40 for the ride), myself included. It's very easy to get to New York City, but a little expensive (about $75 round-trip).

The School of Management is the hardest to get into, but I don't know much about the requirements beyond what's listed on the website, sorry.

I haven't been outside yet, so I'm only estimating the less than an inch, I could be wrong. But it's sticking. The grass and trees are still snow-covered.

We're thinking of coming over for an Open House on November 8 - seeing is believing.

That it is! Just remember that college students don't get up before noon on weekends, so if campus seems quiet, it's because we're all sleeping in!

This is not our first Open House I pretty much have my expectations.
