SUNY Binghamton Art Program

I need help on this one since I can't seem to find any type of review on the art academics. Anybody that goes here, how is it? I would be concentrating my studies in graphic design.

can anybody help???

I am a senior double major in psychology and graphic design at Binghamton. i love it. I’ve been a Teaching Assistant for 2 of the professors for the last 2 years now…For having a moderate art program at Binghamton, I feel like I definitely have enough experience to go out into the world and get a job after being in the program. The professors see you from the beginning to the end if you want them too…Each of the professors focuses on a different aspect. Loring Bixler focuses on the basics, and doing things by hand to teach you the fundamentals. He used to be a designer for IBM. Mike Wesko (who teaches most of the classes) has you do an array of projects such as CD design, magazine design, magazine covers, t-shirt designs, ads as well as whole ad campaigns. He also teaches a class on typography which is probably one of the best classes that i’ve taken there and a history of graphic design which is also extremely interesting. Then there is Cindy Blackman who focuses her efforts on teaching the adobe products to the students. She is very good with teaching you the production aspect of the projects, making sure that it is ready to go to a printer, how to go about sending files to others, etc. I think that from the fundamentals to the end when they help you put a website or portfolio together, you have a well rounded program. If you have any specific questions please feel free to let me know.

Here is a link that might be helpful to you as well…it lists a description of the classes you can take as a graphics major and you can click on the syllabus for each one to see more in detail: [Binghamton University - Academics: Schools and Colleges: Harpur College: Art: Undergraduate Program: Graphic Design](http://www2.binghamton.edu/art/graphicdesign.html)

I have been a TA for Arts 305, and Arts 310.

Sounds good, you familiar with SUNY Purchase? I’m choosing between the two. I know Binghamton is more prestigious overall but I hear Purchase is geared toward Art in general.

Please read my private message. I did apply and get into Purchase for art but since it is a concervatory, I didn’t really want art to be my life. At Binghamton, the classes are 3 hrs - 2 times a week so it really isn’t that overwhelming.

Anybody else have anything to add on the art education?

Hi Qtjan5! I assume by now you’ve graduated. I am a freshman at Bing and considering majoring in graphic design. What did you end up doing with your double major degree in psychology and graphic design? That sounds very interesting!
