SUNY chances?

Hi I’m looking at what my chances would be for these SUNY schools, oneonta, albany , buffalo, Cortland, plattsburgh

83 gpa (did bad on 9th grade and got 89 gpa for 10th and 11th grade)
1070 on new sat (no essay)
21 on act

My brother got into Oneonta, Albany, and Cortland (didn’t apply to the other 2) with your SAT/ACT scores but a 90 gpa. It’s a stretch, but I wouldn’t say you have no chance. Especially if you have good extracurriculars and teacher recommendations.

Thank you

U of Buffalo, probably not, but Buffalo State probably. Plattsburgh, Oneonta, Cortland, maybe. Albany, less likely but not as unlikely as U Buff. I am not even encouraging S17 with a 3.4 and 27 ACT to bother with Buffalo.

Check out the SUNY.edu site, which will give you the ranges for each school, as well as the majors and programs each one offers.

Techmom,

NO NO NO. Have your son apply to Buffalo. Trust me, they are not as selective as they would like you to believe. Our friends son is going to Suny Albany, however, he applied to Suny Buffalo and got in as well with a 1100 sat and a 90 or so gpa. A 27 act score is excellent. It is the equivalent of a 1200 give or take a few points on the OLD SAT. In fact, our friends son heard back from Buffalo very quickly. Albany and Buffalo were the first ones to get back to him. He was a good student, but his sat scores were on the lower end of the ranges with a 1100.\

Now, if your son applies to the engineering school at Buffalo he may not ge in right away. He may have to spend a year in Buff and take some prerequisite courses and do well in them to transfer to the engineering school, but as a whole I say he has a good chance. There are no guarantees but for the 75 or so dollars, why not apply?

That is just my take on it.

One other thing. Those figures that we all see are the middle 50% ranges. So, 25% score higher and 25% score lower than those ranges. But, even not factoring outside the ranges, your son seems to be in the range with the act scores. And do not let admission office tell you otherwise. They do put alot of weight on the act/sat scores.

Thanks for the nice words. Techson is interested in theater tech. Engineering is not even on his radar; he barely passed alegbra.

I had him look at U Buffalo and he decided against it - too large and spread out for his taste. Fredonia and Purchase, where he is applying, are much smaller schools on smaller campuses. That is what he seems to prefer. Albany isn’t a huge campus, but it doesn’t have a BFA program.

My son was accepted to:

New Paltz
Oswego
Oneonta
Cortland
Plattsburgh
Binghampton rolled from early action to regular decision so still waiting

87 GPA
1200 new SAT
27 ACT

That’s great. My son has similar stats but didn’t do the SAT. He has only applied to Purchase and Fredonia because of his major.

What does your son want to study?

@techmom99 political science

He also got in to:
Rutgers
Ithaca College
Towson
Hofstra

I can’t justify the cost when he got in to several SUNYs. Been down that road with my 20 year old who started at Purdue and is now at Geneseo
