I’m going to transfer in as a junior from a community college to either SUNY Geneseo or Cornell. I want to be either a PA or a doctor, so does it really matter where I go for undergrad? It’ll probably be cheaper to go to Geneseo and I want to go there because it’s smaller. Am I making a horrible decision by not going to Cornell?
If you live in New York and are going to one of the land-grant colleges at Cornell (i.e. CALS, Human Ecology, ILR), then you will be paying in-state tuition. Cornell may wind up being cheaper regardless due to financial aid. Have you gotten accepted to both? Have you received financial aid packages from both?
You might change y9ur mind about being a doctor along the way. I would pick Connell. (if it does not cost you Arma ans legs…)
Geneseo is what some consider a “public ivy” and I’ve known quite a few graduates who all loved it there. Geneseo graduates get into top graduate programs. For medical school Geneseo will be fine. Cornell of course has a great national reputation while Geneseo’s is more regional. My son looked at both nd though Cornell seemed too big and impersonal but of course that was subjective.
@artie1 Even though I hate the term “public ivy” I have to ask: who exactly considers Geneseo a public ivy? I’ll admit the list of the original public ivies weren’t all gems… But Geneseo? Why? How?
gdlt234- The term public ivy was used loosely as a term for a highly respected public college. If you’ll notice I put the terms in quotations. Not sure why the strong reaction-you might want to relax a little more.
There is nothing official about anyone’s use of the term even if there was historical reference since the term Ivy League had nothing to do with academics originally anyway.
Geneseo is a top public college in the Northeast. Here are some of the highlights from their website:

By the way, I have no connection to Geneseo, my son will be going to a private college next year.
If $ is involved, I’d say SUNY. Even in a land grant, the tuition is $33 vs $9ish for SUNY. So unless FA evens it out, save for med school.
