what have you guys heard about new paltz? pros? cons? whats it like being a student there?

My son is considering a transfer there next semester. We have visited a number of times and know a few people who go there. We have heard all positive things from them. We like the size of the school, the location, the artsy vibe, the funky town, the friendly student body. The school is up and coming and had the largest freshman class ever this past fall.....1,300 where in past years it was more like 900-1000. Their selectivity has risen. Getting written up by Newsweek as the Best small state school has also put this school on the map.

If you have any questions, I could try and answer them. Are you thinking of applying as a freshman for next fall? I would also love to hear from those that go here!

Thanks a lot for the reply, and yes I am applying for next fall.

wow i didn't realize how difficult it would be to get in... SAT is a 540 math and 520 reading, gpa is 2.6 unweighted (because freshman year i got a 1.9 and steadily improved with a 3.1 at junior year) I come from one of the best public high schools in CT and captain of the wrestling team. You think I got a shot if I apply early?

Oh yeah and I'm taking SATs again

Sorry but I don't think a 2.6 GPA is going to get you into New Paltz. You might consider going to a community college for a year. If you earn a strong GPA at a community college, you can try to transfer into New Paltz.

figured lol, Yea i think id prefer just a different 4 year college over a community college. But thanks for the reply... My guidance councilor must be cracked out telling me that i have a shot at Uconn.

freshman year was a killer.... 1.9 freshman 2.8 sophmore and 3.0 junior and i have a 2.6 gpa :(

Do you live in New York? SUNY has some 2 year colleges that have decent campuses and dorms. You will get the experience of living on a campus and dorm life. If you excel academically at one of them, you could try to transfer to a more selective college. Don't fret---there is a college out there for everyone. Sometimes, you may not start out at one of your top choices but with hard work, you may have the opportunity to end up at one of them via a transfer.

yeah.. I live in CT and i definitly have some other options thanks for the advice.

Good Luck. There's a college out there for you so don't worry.

nysmile - can you tell me what SUNY 2 year schools have dorms? I have a son who is a junior with a 2.? average. It may be his only option, but I would like him to experince dorm life.

Thanks,

SUNY Morrisville - Morrisville State College - State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Morrisville - SUNY Morrisville

SUNY Cobleskill- SUNY Cobleskill - State University of New York

lottastrikes, both of the above offer associates degrees. Also, you might want to look into Suny Delhi.

With a steadily improving gpa and help from your GC, you may have a chance, especially if you do well first term senior year. Particularly if you are taking solid courses and your test scores are in range. Your GC should not only emphasize your upward trend in her rec, but should call the admissions office and talk to the adcom handling your app personally. I've seen kids like you get into schools that would not ordinarily take kids with such a GPA, but due to the trend and/or other factors, they did gain admittance.

Also, Mohawk Valley Community College.

MVCC First

Also, Onondaga Community College

Thank you. I will check into these.

thanks a lot for the reply... atleast my confidence went up a little bit..lol
