I just came back over the weekend from an overnight visit to Plattsburgh as part of the MultiCultural Visitation Program. Nice campus, nice area, etc. Upon coming home my mom told me I finally got a letter from SUNY Buffalo. I got in, and I was pretty excited, until I realized I haven't even seen the campus yet, and they expect the money in 10 days. My major is Business Administration. What do you guys suggest? Is there a big gap in Degree Quality between both schools?

Hi MilTee- NY Mom here and SUNY Oswego grad. We're sort of a SUNY family (hubby SUNY-Albany & d will be going to SUNY Cortland) so I am going to give you a gut response. I'll assume you are talking Univ of Buffalo and not Buff State (oh yeah! my sis went to Buff State). If you are going for Business Admin. I think you are better off at Buffalo. They have a graduate program too and even a combo BA/MBA program. Usually, the state U's are stronger schools to go to than the colleges. The only instance I would suggest a state college over the Univ center is if the college has a specific program that you are interested in. Though Plattsburg may have a business program, I am sure the one at Buff is more well regarded. After saying that- my own d was accepted to U of Albany but chose Cortland. For HER, the reason is that Cortland has a sports management and exercise science program/ Albany does not. If my d was going for business or a liberal arts major, I would have "steered" her to the University. FYI- SUNY does have a Recruitment and Info center in NYC. They may have more info etc. I checked the SUNY website and they are located at 420 Lexington Ave- phone # 818-1204. Maybe a SUNY counselor can help you out. Also check out SUNY Buffalo- school of Management, they had a lot of info about the business programs. The only thing I can really say with certainty, is that SUNY Plattsburg is colder than SUNY Oswego (and probably Buffalo too). Also just as a practical matter- Jet Blue flies directly from NYC to Buffalo- Plattsburg is a pretty long trip. Good luck.

Hi - My freinds' son is a Business major at Buffalo and it's a very competitive program . I think you should be aware that Buffalo has two campuses - with a bus shuttle . One is very old , in the city , with subway connections . The other way is out on the suburbs and really relies on cars to get off campus . However , Buffalo has a lot of ethnic food places, bars open till 4 am and many internationals living on both campuses. Plattsburgh is a big hockey( ski ? ) town with easy access to Canadien spots .

Buffalo is the better choice for business. It's also a great city with alot of stuff to do!

Buffalo is a great choice for business, and a better SUNY overall (I would argue it's the fourth best SUNY school while Plattsburgh is in the muddled middle of the pack). Plus you'll find more to do in the city - go to a Sabres game!

Let's not be so quick to dis SUNY Plattsburgh. I have friends who are loyal alumni of SUNY Buffalo and I trust their objective evaluation of Buffalo's fine academic quality. However, I've taken a look at Plattsburgh's academic departments and faculty qualifications and I am impressed. Moreover, the two schools are really quite different. SUNY Plattsburgh is more like a somewhat large liberal arts college. SUNY Buffalo is a large "research university" campus. "Pick 'em," as the bettors in Vegas say.
