I'm a high school senior who will be going to SUNY Plattsburgh for pre med. Do you guys think that Plattsburgh is good for pre med. I will also be in the Honors Program. Do you think the Honors Program will enhance my application for Medical School.

i don’t know about SUNY Plattsburgh, but I can assume that if my Honors Program is great for pre-meds, then urs should be too

Thats great. Which honors program are u in?
anybody know about SUNY Plattsburgh?

I go to Canisius, u know? they have this All-College Honors Program, which replaces the Canisius core curriculum with all these advanced courses that cover various subjects (mostly in the Humanities). The fact that its advanced is key

EDIT: Actually I think I’m wrong about what I said a post before. It’s beneficial to medical school not because the courses are advanced, but because the Honors Program opens many doors for research and volunteering/shadowing opportunities, internships, and other perks to enjoy during undergrad

Oh yea Canisius in Buffalo. What do you like about the honors program, are there small seminars of various topics? Because thats what Plattsburgh emphasizes on - seminar based classes. What year are u in and have you applied to med school yet?

Plattsburgh is what I would call up and coming. The caliber of student going there is improving every year, in large part because of the recession making SUNY in general more attractive to students who might otherwise have gone private.

My D is in the Honors Program but she’s an ed major. The program is not a specific set aside of advanced courses in each discipline. Each semester, a number of seminars are offered which track various different gen ed and/or major requirements. There does appear to be the possibility to do research in conjunction with that as well. If you have not yet registered for the fall, you can look at the seminars. One you might like, given your interests, is Science: Evolution and Human Origin.

There are opportunities to volunteer at the local hospital, etc. through the volunteer program.

My D LOVES Plattsburgh so much that she got herself a job on campus this summer so she could be up there. I have a feeling she may not be back after college.

thanks for the info Joan52

You’re welcome MD…

My D picked Plattsburgh because she was offered money, which the other SUNYs she got in to did not. She picked SUNY because she wants to teach, so a state school made the most sense to her. It has a very good music department and that’s her concentration.

She’s now one of those kids who walks backwards and gives tours. You’d never know it wasn’t originally her first choice.

I have a friend whose cousin went to the school in the 70’s and never left, still works at the school.
