SUNY Polytechnic Institute/Binghamton - What's better?

Hey guys,

I was accepted to SUNY Poly’s Computer & Electrical Engineering program with a full scholarship. I will probably change to Computer Science if I attend, but I was also accepted to Binghamton’s Watson School of Engineering which I would have to pay quite a bit for (I am an in-state student). I really don’t know much about SUNY Poly, but I know a bit about Bing so would it be worth spending the money at Bing or would it not matter? I am really not sure. Thank you and any feedback is appreciated!

With SUNY sometimes aid is better if your parents weren’t tax payers for 18 years before you applied. Look up ratings for engineering for all schools you’ve applied to.

I’ve never heard of SUNY Poly. Comparing stats, Binghamton seems to be more selective and have higher scores. At Bing, 91% return for soph year, 81% graduate in 6 years. At Poly, 74% return and only 49% graduate. I guess I’d be concerned about the low graduation rate - what’s the reason for that? I’d do some more research…look at what students from Poly are doing after graduation, or talk to some current ones. The difference between $100k and $0 (or are you paying room and board?) is huge, so even though I love Bing I wouldn’t take the decision lightly.

SUNY Polytech used to be called SUNYIT (result of merged SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering and SUNY Institute of Technology). It is benefiting from a huge influx of support-and it will dwarf STEM at any of the SUNY’s known for science let along those known for being great places for all those interested in studying ancient French romance novels read by nobody. For anything STEM, a SUNY with strong science, math and engineering seems like it would be a better bet than any of them that are big in English and ancient French novelists.

Anyone watching the building on campus has got to be impressed!

Of course, add considering the system! This building may actually look like it was built this century-Unlike building on other SUNY campuses where buildings designed to be built decades ago are now being built but are already obsolete and totally bumbled (due to SUNY stopping and starting building depending upon if there are any pennies left in the jug this week to keep building). Maybe this new merged university will actually be mediocre or better-now if only the rest of the SUNY system could rise to mediocre it would be a far better system.

The new SUNY Poly for Nanotechnology in Albany has a great reputation. The old SUNY IT (also called POLY now) in Utica is not the same as the new Nano location. Be careful to know which one you are attending @joedoe before you decide. If Bing and Poly Utica location both costed the same, I’d go with Bing but a full ride is very tempting so you have to decide based on your personal situation.

Thank you for the suggestions and I will consider both schools. I will probably choose Bing though just on account of the program and the debt would probably only be $30,000 - $50,000 which is substantial but doable with an engineering degree.
