SUNY potsdam students please help

I want to go to SUNY potsdam to major in music business, however at some point you have to take some level of audition and a recital
I play no instruments, so is it worth going to?
if you fail you can be dismissed from the school
if anyone has done this already
and doesn't play a instrument, did you pass?
was it easy, hard?
please help

I just looked on the Crane School (SUNY Potsdam school of music) website, and the only Music Business thing I see is a MINOR in music business. I'm not clear whether this is something that is attached to any major within the college of music or within the university as a whole.

You may want to give them a call...and ask. If the school requires an audition...you will have to pass the audition in order to be accepted.

You might want to also look at Belmont in Tennessee...they have a music business major...no audition required.

Voice is also considered an "instrument".

If you don't have your heart set on Crane, you might look into Setnor School of Music, at Syracuse U. They have a new program called the Bandier Program that is in addition to their "regular" music business degree. I don't know what the differences are, but when we went to visit SU's music school they said specifically that Bandier does not require an aud.

Other schools you may want to check out are NYU and Berklee College of Music. If you are serious about wanting to enter the music business field then it would be wise to think about schools in areas where you can find good real business interships and make contacts. It is my understanding that the reason Berklee's rate of graduation is so low is that most of the students find excellent jobs in the industry before graduation.

Well, if you play no instruments, and I assume that includes voice?, then you will need to become proficient enough to pass the audition. However, though I have no experience with this, I've gotten the impression that the music business majors have lower expectations in their auditions, but I really don't know. I'm pretty sure that there is a major in music business but contact the admissions office and ask. I don't know about the recital b/c that is probably referring to your A level, but I didn't know/think that music business majors had to pass that, but I have no idea. Again, most of these questions would be best directed to the admissions office or the dean of Crane, Alan Soloman, whose email is found on the website for crane...potsdam.edu/crane. Another option for you if you really want to go and aren't proficient on any instrument is to go to potsdam, take lessons with an instructor at crane, and then reaudition later. I know students who auditioned for other programs that weren't accepted that went to potsdam, took lessons, and then reauditioned and were accepted. However, if you aren't proficient, it may take some more time...best of luck to you and feel free to pm me if you have any more questions.

It's going to depend on the competetivity of the studio. You wll have to be proficient enough to be accepted into a studio with education and performance majors.
