Hello, currently a senior graduating in 2018. Interested in Pre Med or Pre Vet. I was accepted to all my schools and am now
stuck between Plattsburgh and Geneseo (In state tuition has got me between these two). I originally was wait listed to Genny, so I enrolled at Platts but was then accepted. I understand Geneseo has one of the best biology programs. I am conflicted because I am interested in a Biology major but am afraid of the rigor of the coursework. In other words, Geneseo alum - is the program really as difficult as it is rumored to be? Do you feel like the course load was worth it? How many hours would you spend studying? Was it difficult to maintain a good GPA and were your professors accessible? For anyone that knows anything about the Plattsburgh biology department, what are the research opportunities like, and how is the course work? I am pretty confident about the challenges I usually choose for myself. I just don’t want to bite off more than I can chew or be drowning in stress over my academics when I am trying to look good for graduate studies.

This is a link to the Plattsburgh bio page. When my D was there, the new facilities were being built. I understand they are very nice. I remember reading that the bio department was well regarded but neither my D nor my S majored in that subject.
Geneseo is considered the “better” school but for med school, you may be better off attending where you can do better. If you have Geneseo stats, you would probably be eligible for the Honors program at P.
Plattsburgh is nice, walkable campus and there is a cute part of town that is walkable. The Amtrak is 5 minutes from campus and Canada is fairly close. Burlington is just across Lake Champlain and there are ferries. To get out of Geneseo, you have to travel about an hour to Rochester. It’s in the middle of nowhere. True story - my friend’s H and D went to tour Geneseo but on the way up, their car went into a ditch. It was pulled out, they turned around and went back home. The girl attended a different SUNY.
Good luck with your choice.
