Super late Yale interview

Hi! I’m an international student and I have applied SCEA to Yale. Although I did not think I had any chance of being accepted, I decided to submit my application on October 31 as Yale has always been my dream school. I was pretty shocked when I was offered a Skype interview a few days (maybe 8 days) before the EA decisions came out. My interviewer told me that the admissions committee wanted to have the interview report sent back to the admissions office as soon as possible because they wanted to know more about me. I really enjoyed my interview and I started thinking I might actually have a chance to fulfill my dream of studying at Yale. On December 15, I found out I was deferred. A student from my country got in without having an interview. Nobody from the city I live in (and from the surrounding area) has been contacted for a Yale interview, not even the RD applicants. I have been analyzing this event for the last 3 months. I don’t know what this means, but I don’t think they would have given me, an international student, this late interview if they knew they were going to defer me anyway. Do you know anybody who has experienced something like this? Do you think this interview was a “bad sign”? What should I do now to improve my chances of being accepted? I have already sent an update of my app, but I don’t know if that’s enough.

I don’t think any interview should be construed as a bad sign because why would the school waste their resources interviewing candidates they KNOW they don’t want? At this point so late in the game, what will be will be. In 18 days, you’ll have your answer.

As an interviewer I can tell you that sometimes we do interviews late in the cycle. Sometimes those students get in, sometimes they don’t. There are many students who are admitted without interviews. I know it is nerve wracking to wait these last few days, but hang in there. Good luck.

Similar thing happened to me. Yale alumni contacted me for an interview for March 22 which seemed extremely late in m perspective but later the interviewer sent me an email syaing that Yale requested it be done sooner. So now my interview is March 15th very close to march 30. Could this mean anything ?

@Tperry1982 do you have knowledge or insight on my situation above?

@Ismaryj It probably just means that the first interviewer had to cancel for some reason and the Alumni Schools Chair (who schedules the interviews) was able to find someone at the last minute willing to do it. At this time of year the AdComs are working day and night, so I am sure your report will be ready in plenty of time to make a decision.

@Tperry1982 Hi there! I heard that interviews for international applicants are selective (i.e. the applicant is pre-screened). Is this true?

I’m sorry. I don’t have any knowledge of the international interview process.
