Super low SAT score, what should do I do?

I'm a chinese girl who has been in U.S. for a year.
My critical reading is like 370! I don't know why other kids can get very high scores. I just can't get the questions done in time, cause there's so many of them!! Plus my vocab. is poor so I pretty much didn't understand the test at all :((((

My math is 700, writing is 520. Well, still bad:(

I just don't understand why so many asians can do so well in SAT :( I mean I'm really having a hard time with English part. When I was in China, at my high school, I was like ranked 39 out of more than 900 students.(high schools are pretty big in China) So I think I'm not dumb or anything, and I was confident about myself, until this SAT seriously bombed my life.

My SAT2 Math2 is 740, Physics is 670.

I was involved in some activities the past year, but didn't really have leadership.
My gpa is like 3.9 unweighted.

I applied to:
Carnegie mellon University (my dream school, early decision. but so hopeless)
University of Pittsburgh.
New York University (I don't know why I applied that one, but oh well)
University of Miami
Drexel University
University of Michigan
Syracuse University
University of Virginia

I will need to apply for more colleges since I don't feel very confident about the colleges above. Please feel free to give me any advise.

I applied for Mechanical Engineering, but I need advise for my major. I know little about those stuff. I'm good at math and physics,so????? any suggestion for what major I should apply to make it easier to get into a college?

I think you should consider buying a SAT I help book and/or getting serious help from a Tutor or close friend. You have an extremely good math score and I’d hate to see you brought down just by an English score. Are you a senior or a Junior?

I’m a senior :frowning:

Hahaha It’s crazy… I really don’t know what to do

Maybe you should get tutored in english and take the SAT 2s to compensate? Aren’t international students (I am assuming you are still international as you have been here for only 1 year) suppose to take the TOEFL or IELTS?

Yes I’m an international student.

Toefl score was 83.

Ok, well I would recommend signing up the January SAT asap, and at this point I believe that you will have to pay the registration late fee. Then, just study, study, and then do some more to top it off. Now, you seem very strong in the sciences and mathematics and you are an international student who has recently moved to the United States. Therefore, I would recommend that you write how you are drawn to numbers and how they are the ‘universal language.’ I would then try and plead that being given admittance will help you not only hone your math and science abilities, but also improve on your English skills. This can work for you, IN MY OPINION though. So, merely take my advice as feedback. I know the deadline for alot of these applications are near so you need to start ASAP.

Also if you take the January SAT, focus on CR and Writing. Your math score is already good so the super score will come out to be higher. You can do this, just study and devote time to it; remember that the end result can be very favorable!

I don’t know anything about TOEFL scores, but 83 sounds fine to me. Look - you’re only one year out of China, and you speak English well enough to communicate in writing. How many US folks could do the same for Chinese? Your math scores are fine.

Don’t sell yourself short.

Write a great essay, work on your scores. You’ll be fine.

You could apply to more math and science tech schools. Or you could try and explain this college adcoms in the additional info section. If a college doesn’t understand your situation, then they don’t deserve you. Good luck :)

Oh wait you already applied to those schools. My bad. Well hit the january SAT hard. Did you tell the colleges about your english problem/dilemma? And you should major in engineering. You can research this major at College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools.
After a couple of years your english will be up to par. Don’t get too down on yourself.
Its actually pretty amazing you scored a 510 in writing which is the 50th percentile, even though you weren’t here for middle and elementary school where they teach all this grammar stuff.

Thanks guys!!!
I’m gonna work hard to make a better essay, and explain my situation to them.

What about applying to some lower tier schools that have good engineering programs? You could work on your English skills (I think you are amazing only living one year in the US) and be competitive for grad schools.

Any suggestion?

I just know a few colleges. There’s so many colleges in U.S., hard to pick

and I kinda want to apply to penn state too.

But I don’t know if it’s too late.

As you’ve only been in the US for a year, I might suggest taking two more years to become proficient in English while attending from a Community College, then transferring into a 4 year university. By then I’ll bet your English will be better than most native speakers.

Drexel might take you based solely on your Math SAT score.

I’m a recent immigrant as well. I moved here almost 2 years ago, and have low SAT scores as well. The blue book has really good strategies, read the book!

What was your ED result from CMU?

I think the result from CMU comes on January 15th.

And yeah I applied Drexel because they sent me a selected application that says I could apply for free. But I spent like an hour and completed the application. I can’t remember what it’s like, but I doubt it was a strong application.

Retake it. It’s not hard at all. I can really help you with it to get 90+. I wrote my own toefl guide. I will take it in one week so I can REALLY help you.

[Post removed. It wasn’t kind, and I regret having posted it.]
