Super Scores/ OOS SAT scores

trey:

Fair enough, but are you suggesting that there are so many OOS legacies that they account for both the 1/3 - 1/4 discrepancy AND all the IS kids who get scores of 1430 or above? I suppose anything is possible, but I doubt it.

SuperNova:

Why on earth would UVA, or any other school, want to drop a system that gives them flexibility in whom they admit and go with a system that gives them little or no flexibility? People I’ve talked to in Texas hate this system as it applies to UT. Why would UVA want to voluntarily adopt it?

Tarhunt:

I am certainly not advocating such a system, I was merely suggesting that a top 5% system is, in effect, the University’s unstated admissions policy for a large portion its instate students. The University has adopted this policy in order to avoid more draconian mandates from the General Assembly. Virginia legislators routinely introduce measures that requirie geographic balance among instate students which, in turn, pressure the University to maintain such a balance on its own.

I think the General Assembly should take a “hands off” approach to the admissions process at UVa since its financial contribution to UVa is too minimal to warrant that level of interference.

lookin’ good, marc!

supernova:

I agree about the level of interference. If you don’t pay, you shouldn’t get to play.

Tarhunt of course not but once you take in consideration oos athletes and legacies in which make up a double digit percentage of oos, then you better be pretty special in a particular area if you dont have a 1430 SAT. That is all I am saying.

trey:

I’d need to see some hard numbers before I bought this. You may be right, but it seems like a low probability to me.

i still ask, are you really willing to bank on being one of those students?

An SAT score of 1430 has been mentioned repeatedly in this thread suggesting that UVa does not give much weight to the Writing section. Does anyone know what the now current policy is?

t/y

uva has always only used writing for placement into the enwr classes you take as a first year. the lowest enwr classes exist for a reason. anything above a 720 is super awesome since i think that’s what exempts you (i dunno how many ppl exempt but it’s assumed that you do NOT exempt so i guess you should think of it that way).

So as long as you get a 720+ score once, even if the next time you take
it your writing score drops, that original 720+ counts? I keep coming back to my super score concern – admissions only counts your highest scores from separate sittings… so if I got 800, 800, 300 – first time
and 700, 600, 800, the next time … My super score would be:
800, 800, 800?

Sorry to be such a pain about this!

yes…
