is anyone sending in supplementary stuff? like a music tape? because I was wondering if we would just have to have it POSTMARKED by the 1st...aka Monday. ahh i haven't done it and its due like in 2 days and I have technology issues...can one tape something on a tape and transfer it onto a burned cd? haha..

Actually, you can.

What you need is:

a) a tape playback system (eg, tape walkman) with a headphone or line-out jack
b) a sound card with a mic/line-in jack
c) a male-male stereo miniplug cable
d) software slightly better than Sound Recorder (look online, plenty of stuff)

Hook the cable up to the headphone jack and the mic jack, then press play on the tape and record on the program. Split into tracks as you see fit, then burn.

good luck!

wow. that totally mad zero sense to me...but thanks for the response!! (i'm just technology incapable!)

I sent in my supplemental CD about 2 weeks ago. I think it had to be postmarked by the 29th (i.e. yesterday) but I am not fully sure of that fact. If you want to make the recording yourself, try to find the most acoustically sound room in your home, place an overhead microphone in the room, connect it to a recording machine, and have at it. Good Luck!

I’m considering sending in supplementary material, but it doesn’t exactly fit the outline. I want to send essays and films that I made.

***, music supplements for Columbia are due by Nov. 1st? For RD?

Do you have other tips for making good self recordings? Im working on a music supplement for cello.

I believe supplements must be sent in by Nov. 1 for ED applicants only, not RD. I was actually just looking on the instructions to apply, from columbia.edu, and it made no reference to the date that it has to be submitted. I’m assuming that date is the regular decision deadline which is around 12/31. I’ll be sending mine out in a few days, I study Alto Saxophone, Piano and Composition, how about everyone else?

Ah ok, I was just freaking out cause Stanford had this dec.1st deadline for music supplements, and I wasn’t planning on submitting part 1 of my columbia app until I found out about early stuff.

Hmm so does columbia just want a CD or does it also want a recommendation and a music resume?

I study violin and piano but I’ll just be submitting one for piano…
