What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way?

For this question...I want to pick a piece of literature (book we read in school) but I'm afraid admissions won't know it (let's just say they don't.) Does that mean I need to do a quick quick summary so they understand the context....or do I write as if they know the book?

Plot summary isn’t necessary. Assume your reader is familiar with the story. After all, these essays are supposed to be about how you were affected by the work, not just a run down of surprising moments in the plot.

I’d do a quick summary if you really think it won’t be well- known. Remember though, they want to learn about you- how you react to something- they are not looking for a new book to read themselves. I’d give the plot in context to its impact on you rather than as an opening paragraph if you can.
