Large cities are many people’s dreams; they’re bustling with excitement and fear and love and light—just about anything a little girl could imagine as she walks through a particularly brightly-lit and noisy street in the heart of Boston. There, she pauses to gawk at the beauty of it all.
I come from a small town in Ohio, where the people and places run together like watery paint, the biggest attractions within twenty minutes are the 24-hour Starbucks and the well-kept parks that close at dusk, and you can’t go to the grocery store without ten people recognizing you—before you even get to the first aisle. Being able to leave that little place and seeing a big city was incredible, and I promised myself when I was a mere eight years old that I would give myself the opportunity to live there, no matter what it took.
Not only is Boston University known (at least to me) for having a wonderful school of education, but it is in a large city, where I have always wanted to teach. My mission in life is to help those who need it most, and inner city schools are some of the ones most in need of excellent teachers.
