Supplemental Recommendation AFTER the deadline...???

I submitted all my applications on time, but have reason to suspect that one of my teacher recommendations was subpar.

Now, recently, I’ve been aggressively applying to outside scholarships and getting recommendations for those. I suddenly realized that my community service mentor who has been writing recommendations for these scholarships (he’s sort of like an adviser to me, almost like a big brother of sorts but we’re not related) would probably make a GREAT supplemental recommendation writer — he knows all my community service involvements extremely well, has known me for 7 years extensively, and is an established community leader and CEO of a business. I didn’t consider him earlier because I thought that they wouldn’t trust his word since he’d known me so long (almost like a family member), but now in light of the possible subpar teacher LOR, it seems that his could possible elucidate a lot of my character particularly outside the classroom and this would be a worthwhile/viable option.

One more thing: I submitted a LOR supplemental via the Common App from a teacher I worked closely with with a maker project. So I already submitted a supplemental to several schools, but I think the community service one potentially could be better.

Can I submit his recommendation via mail to Ivy-league type schools that allow supplemental recs? Is it too past the deadline? Is it overload with LOR’s since I already submitted one supplemental? Any advice? Is it too late??? Thanks so much for any help anyone can give.

Think of your community leader–he will be inconvenienced by your apparent lack of deadline awareness. (You will certainly NOT say that you suddenly want his letter because someone else did not praise you.) And he’ll be under pressure to write this recommendation and send it off asap. So if you haven’t asked him yet, then don’t. It would be insulting and improper for you to do so. It does not matter if he is a close friend and if he would be glad to oblige.

On the other hand, IF it’s already been written, then go ahead and send it off. There’s no harm in trying.

@chowling He’s already written it [I should have clarified better]. I think I’ll go for it, I doubt he’d be insulted!
