My daughter wants to study drama but some schools don't require auditions, yet some allow supplemental DVD's or CD's in addition to the application. How do admissions offices really feel about watching or listening to these presentations? How long is appropriate. How unprofessional can it be? Would a clipping of each of her plays be too ridiculous. I know she has talent in this area but don't want her to be a fool if it is considered "tacky" like those bragging holiday cards!

My SAT class teacher just graduated from Columbia. She told me that they play those tapes in class sometimes just to make fun of the kids who do that.

All in all, no, it makes one look like an idiot.

Wow, that's good to know, because my daughters college counselor is strongly encouraging her to put together a DVD. I know that Yale and Northwestern give instructions for sending this kind of supplement but my gut reaction tells me no. Someone on another thread said she believes she got into her stretch college because of her music supplement DVD.
Do some colleges like them while others don't?

usually i always advise against sending supplemental DVD or CD unless one is applying to study music, drama, theater, etc. SO in your case, i would send it. as for how long and which, pick the BEST (which almost always mean the one that won awards) and keep it to about 5 mintues.
