Supplementary Arts Materials for Arch a MUST?

Hey everyone! This is my first time posting a thread on CC, and i'm really looking forward to some help!

SO, I have finalized my list of colleges, but I'm in the dilemma of choosing my MAJOR.
I have a choice between architecture and economics, my first choice being ARCH.

HOWEVER, I do not have any portfolio prepared, nor is it possible for me to put together a portfolio in just a month, and well, while i am passionate about art, i haven't been in the practice of exercising my artistic talents in a pretty long while.

Basically, what I'm asking is, should i choose "ARCHITECTURE" as my first major preference if i am unable to provide the school with Supplementary Art Materials?

Does choosing a first preference major reduce my chances of getting into the college?

FYI : NONE of my colleges have SPECIALIZED Arch schools. They do, however, offer Arch programs. [examples include: Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, Wellesley, Princeton, etc]

I'd really appreciate some feedback ASAP, thanks! =)

Do you have any experience other than art that shows your interest in architecture? Can you explain how your interest in architecture has developed in one of your essays? As long as your can show how your skills and aspirations match your first-choice major, the arts supplement will be optional.

Besides, architecture students are not all artists. Math, science and social science are also important components of architecture. I’d say that analytical skills and creativity, rather than artistic skills specifically, are what are really important to architecture.

But on the other hand, if you can show your interest in, say, economics wayyyy better than your interest in architecture… then you might consider putting that as your first choice major as it will get you into the college easier.

Just my opinions… but hope that helps!

Since you’re going for a BA or BS not a BArch, you won’t have to declare a major until sometime in your sophomore year. I don’t think it matters much whether you list architecture as your intended major or apply as undecided.

If you do express an interest in architecture I think the submission of an arts portfolio would be a plus as it would give you another EC; however not submitting one would not be a minus. It’s definitely not a requirement.

As xkkathy notes, architectural studies is fairly broadbased, not just design focused.
