Surfage, Brah?

I would like to know, what is the surf like in the general area around Stanford? E.G. Size of waves, consistency, temperature, and distance/time away from a good surf spot?

Basically: Is it worth bringing my board?

The water is almost always cold (it’s the pacific), but from my friends there’s generally the best surfing in half moon bay about an hour away. obviously you can go to mavericks or other local spots to get insane waves, but there are apparently some decent spots thought apparently it’s not that great here. Also every now and then there’s a earthquake or storm off the coast that produces good waves.

I’m not anything of a surfer (I’ve only done it a few times in Hawaii) and dont know that much about bay area surfing, but I live around here and have some friends so I hope that helped

Half Moon Bay is 30 minutes away at most (google maps confirms this as well). And Mavericks IS AT Half Moon Bay. It’s just the spot at the northern tip of the bay. The waves at Half Moon Bay last Wednesday were 20+ feet and they have been 10+ for the last few weeks. These three months are spectacular for anyone who loves big waves.

The infamous Maverick’s surf competition is going to happen sometime in the next 1-2 months, and there will be 40-60 foot waves for that competition. A bunch of students here are going to make an excursion to watch the competition.

Definitely bring your board. A surf club was founded two years ago and they are working on making trips to Half Moon Bay and other local surf spots easier for those without cars. The outdoors club here also rents out boards and wetsuits for free. The wetsuits are top notch. The boards are half-foam and funboard in length, but still good for catching waves (and definitely good for beginners in case you want to teach some friends).

The only difficulty you may find is getting to the beach. Most freshmen do not have cars because the University do not give freshmen parking permits. But there are plenty of upperclassmen who hit up surf spots each weekend and you’ll inevitably meet some if you mention that you surf when meeting people. And if the surf club is successful, then it will be really easy.

If worst comes to worst, there is always zipcar.
