I live deep in the valley of Northern California so there is no ocean where I am. I have always wanted to learn how to surf but was never in the right location long enough. I know Pismo Beach is pretty close to Cal Poly and I figured college was the perfect time to learn how to surf because of the location. Are there any surfboard shops or rental facilities in SLO? Also is there anywhere where I can get lessons on how to surf?

There are both in SLO and the surrounding beach communities. In fact, there is a surfboard craft shop where you can shape your own board within the campus. It’s part of the student union I believe. Cal Poly is definitely a surfer friendly school, and was something that I made sure to find out on my last visit.

Cal Poly is ranked as one of the Top 10 surf schools in the United States: [Top 10 Surf Colleges | SURFER Magazine](http://www.surfermag.com/features/top-10-surf-colleges/)

And, yes! They actually have a surf board shop on campus where you can shape your own board and you can connect with other kids that surf. If you want to surf you can do it in your first week on campus.

So how is the water in mid September?
