We had a very pleasant surprise this morning when the FEDEX truck showed up with an acceptance letter to W&L for our son!!!

He had applied ED, was deferred to RD, and ultimately waitlisted.

He wrote a letter to the Dean of Admissions expressing his continued desire to go to W&L and updating his accomplishments.

He followed that up with a call to the Ass't Dean of Admissions, who he had interviewed with to verify that they had received his letter and to once again reiterate his interest in W&L.

We assumed he would have to wait until sometime later in May to find out if, by some slim chance, he would be offered admissions off of the waitlist.

We had even sent in our deposit (non-refundable) to Villanova to make sure he had another school to go to if W&L fell through -- in fact we are (were)headed up to Villanova today for their admitted students weekend.

W&L has always been his first choice school, so we are extremely excited to finally get him admitted.

AARGH! I just stepped out to run an errand and came home to a FEDEX tag on my door.

Called the company - the "package" is from W&L.

My daughter applied RD and was waitlisted. She wrote a letter to the Dean expressing her continued interest in the school and mentioning the fencing scholarship she won and the fact that two of her works have been selected for an art show.

Great to hear about more enthusiastic members of W&L's Class of 2010! This is more evidence that the University weighs demonstrated interest heavily.

Esquette, I think you're right about demonstrated interest.

At last the Fedex truck returned and it was a letter of acceptance! We are headed down to the school tomorrow, and the daughter of friends of ours, a really great kid, is going to show us around and bring our daughter to a mixer at her sorority. She works in the admissions office and said to get off the waitlist now was unusual, it generally takes a few more weeks.

Congratulations to your children. I can never mention enough how important demonstrating interest could be and I think this is a great example. I'm looking forward to seeing them on Move-In Day with the rest of the class of 2010. Congratulations again!

WOW - congrats!!!!! what wonderful news for both families. Now can do the happy dance for sure. Enjoy your visit to W&L - what a nice celebration for both of you. Thank goodness for having a very nice Fedex guy too LOL.

When my son spoke with admissions regarding his chances of being accepted off of the waitlist, he was told that decisions on selecting applicants from the waitlist wouldn't be made until sometime after the 1 May deadline for regular admissions students to respond as to there intent to attend W&L.

I would expect that most of the students selected from the waitlist won't be offered admission until sometime in May.

I can't explain why a few individuals were selected from the waitlist so early. This was certainly a welcome surprise for us, but I definitely wouldn't give up hope and would follow Dima343's advice to make sure W&L knows you are still interested in attending.

ginger, from my research it does seem that W&L offers acceptance to students from the waitlist at a greater rate than many other schools. That's why I told my daughter not to give up if she really wanted W&L, and I would say the same to you.

As College Dad pointed out, it's standard operating procedure for most schools not to pull from the waitlist until after May 1 when response cards are due in. My daughter's acceptance was a happy surprise that I can't explain.

Dima343, I must say that I have found your many of your postings to be incredibly informative - thank you! I'm stuck up here reading about W&L while my husband and daughter visit. (Son has a hockey game - at the same time the Devils are playing the Rangers....grr. Go Devils. Boo Rangers)

I told them I want a full report, spare no details! My daughter is over the moon at this point, but very intrigued about the sorority "mixer".

There may be a bit of an explanation for these wonderful acceptances - W&L may have already received no-thanx from some slots - and have some students who were left teetering on the fence in-line to be accepted - tho they were waitlisted - but before the wait-list officially is utilized - the no-thanx ones have turned table to your very lucky kiddos.

DOBIESK - what a wonderful opportunity for your gal - we were there the year the sorority houses were completed and were being ''decorated'' - and they were absolutely beautiful - I remember talking to some girls who would be moving in the following fall were very excited about it - it was about time - most of the frat houses are pretty nice as well - and owned by the school.

One thing that I was awestruck about initially - but loved in the long-run - was that every house had a live-in house-mom LOL - quite a crew of ladies were there at the time...................LOL..........and I have to admit that the food at the houses was very good too.

Can't wait to hear your report of your DD's adventures at W&L.

College Dad and Dobiesk8r thanks for the support. I will tell my son to not give up hope that he will be taken off the waitlist. Would you mind telling me what state you both live in?

JeepMom, I think you're right about my daughter teetering on the fence. I always thought she had a good chance, but her SATs were a bit low for W&L - 1300. She was strong enough to be admitted to Colby, Trinity and NYU.

But there was something about W&L.....I'm not sorry to say goodbye to NYU, although it's close by. It's just not my idea of a college experience.

Ginger, I thought the Devils was a good hint ;). We're from NJ.

Dima, Islanders, eh? I don't know the name of the sorority, but the mixer is a Baywatch theme!

Yup I'm from Queens - ISLANDERS!. And I'm guessing your daughter's friend is a Chi-O then, they're having a shipwreck mixer with Sigma Nu tonight. I might be there, though I'm not a big fan of SNu parties . .

What you say about NYU is exactly why I chose W&L over big city schools - the college experience. Besides, you can always go back to the big city for grad school (my plan).

We are from Northern Virginia -- makes me even more surprised our son got in as the competition from this area is very stiff.

What makes this great for us is that our daughter was accepted to W&L two years ago and after quite a bit of anguish chose UVA.

Although she loves UVA, she has frequently wondered if she would have loved W&L even more.

Now she will get a little bit of the W&L experience when she visits her brother (I really thinks she wants an excuse to wear a W&L Trident Sweatshirt).

I would stay optimistic for your son's chances. If they are taking some students off of the waitlist this early, that may very well mean that they are having higher than expected rejections from those that were admitted RD.

OOOO to be a kid again - W&L would be my one and only choice LOL......... I got to live vicariously tho - still think the place is just absolutely AWESOME tho...... and so does my graduated son.
