I got rejected and really wasn't expecting it from UVA. Although I am out of state, do I pretty much have no chance of getting into Vanderbilt and Duke if i couldn't get in UVA?

As you know, Vandy and Duke do not coordinate their decisions with UVA. Compare your general stats with the prior acceptances at these two universities. If you are on the low end then you obviously may have issues. Otherwise, don’t worry about it.

While UVA is considered easier to get into than Duke, it’s possible that Duke puts more emphasis on certain qualities than Virginia. I think it’s definitely possible to be turned down at Virginia and accepted at Duke, even if you are turned down instate.

It’s definitely possible if you are out of state applying to UVA.

My friend’s son was also rejected at Virginia, and he had top stats too.

Also out of state

There is no rhyme or reason to the process

Last year, my brother’s kid got rejected at Syracuse, but got into Cornell

The “no rhyme or reason” comment is not accurate. We dedicate months to this process and arrive at decisions after collaboration and discussion.

Every school is building a class that meets many different institutional needs. You can’t always predict decisions at one school based on those that are released by another.

Hang in there, OP. Good luck with your other decisions. I’m sorry it didn’t work out at UVa.

I’m OOS and got rejected too… i don’t get it… I’ve got great stats, great EC’s, great rec’s…

I know they reserve a majority of the spots for instate residents, but the OOS competition can’t ALL be 4.0+ etc…

this sucks. I bet I hit the Auto Deny pile before even going to committee…

UVA is not a private school, and their admissions decisions are not the along the same lines as elite privates, so it is not as clear that you will be denied at schools more selective in the the same statistical matter as you would had this been one of the other privates. Though there are always surprises in admissions, I have found things to be more capricious at UVA. The OOS status puts even more of a spin on it. I have my fingers crossed for you.

I totally support what the others are saying: if you received a rejection from UVA, a public university, don’t assume you’ll be rejected from other top private universities. I am an instate student & I feel like there’s no way I ever would have gotten in here if that weren’t the case. I had good stats, etc., but being instate helped for sure. Have heart, y’all - the good news will start rolling in!
