I got a 31 ACT and have a 4.2 gpa and I was deferred from the university of dayton. I played varsity soccer and violin so I think my extracurrciulars are decent. There was no essay This was my backup and admits students with 24 ACTs and equivalent gpas.

I'm not trying to be cocky or anything but I think I should have gotten in! Do you think this was a mixup?? Kind of nervous because I applied to a lot more prestigious schools than this.

Any advice or comments? I was not denied and the letter said they wanted to talk to me via visit or skype for more info. I already visited once. Hmmmm, Im a little shaken up here seeing how I was accepted to OSU.

Is that a public school? If so, are you from the area and do you know the loacal admission guidelines? For the state CSU’s in California, required classes, where you live, major, and impaction factor in heavily.

If you prefer OSU to Dayton, then the Dayton deferral isn’t worth worrying about. If you prefer Dayton, then talk to them in person or via Skype. Sometimes schools will defer students whose stats are so much higher than their usual catch that they don’t want to “waste” offers of admission, calculating the applicant is just using them as a safety and is going to end up at a more selective school. But if you talk and they see you’re genuinely interested, it’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t make the offer. Unless there’s some other problem in your app that’s hanging them up, but if so, it might be helpful to know that.

The University of Dayton is private. Catholic school.

I havnt been caught drinking or breaking the law or something of that nature so I don’t think anything else has affected my application. However, I did like the school when I went there so there is a chance I may go there.

I reality, this just made me nervous that I have NO chance at Notre Dame, though I know my chances are slim.

The deferral is surprising given Dayton’s statistics.

A thought

I don’t often recommend this, but if it’s a school you’re serious about, perhaps ask your GC to call the school and find out why. It’s easier for him/her to do so and more likely to get an honest answer, especially since the schools want the GCs to think favorably on them. Also, it’s possible that a mistake was made (or that with the new ‘show of interest’ that an acceptance can be forthcoming).

Also, I wouldn’t give up on ND.

One thing about the admissions process – it’s unpredictible. MANY MANY students find themselves getting into several … supposedly … more prestigious schools only to find a surprise rejection sneaking in there. It happens every year. Try not to worry about it.

I don’t know much about U of Dayton, but it’s possible they have Tuft’s syndrome…it’s when a college rejects or waitlists certain over-qualified applicants in order to maintain a good yield. Very common with George Washington U, check out their decision threads from previous years.

I agree with above. Especially if they asked you to speak with them.

I’m guessing they thought you picked them as a safety (you did), and figured that you would probably get accepted somewhere better and go there. It’s logical from their point-of-view because they can accept someone who truly wants to go rather than someone who is using it as a safety.
